Carthage Republican
December 3, 1913
As transcribed by Cora R. Swift

Simon T. Callihan, son of John and Elizabeth (Long) Callihan, was born near Fountain Green, Illinois, on the 8th of March 1847, and died as a result of chronic endocarditis, heart trouble, at his home in Tennessee, Illinois, at three o'clock Saturday morning, the 22nd of November 1913, being sixty-six years, eight months and fourteen days of age.  Except seventeen months served during the civil war his entire life was spent near Fountain Green, until twenty-four years ago, since which time Tennessee has been his home.

He was the fifth of a family of six children.  Two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Day of Fountain Green and Emma P. Oakman of Tennessee and William of California, preceded him in death.

On the 28th of December 1868 he was united in marriage with Margaret A. Williams.  To this union seven children, three sons and four daughters were born.  One John R., died in infancy; W. E. of Knoxville, Illinois; Mrs. Maude Bowles, Mrs. Jewel Black and T. N. of Galesburg, Illinois; Lotie E. and Cle B., at home.  Besides the devoted wife and children, seven grand--children, one sister, Ann E. Cuba, of Tennessee one brother, C. F. of Colchester, Illinois, and a host of friends are left to mourn their loss.

Before he was seventeen he responded to his country's call for volunteers and enlisted in Co. D, 64th regiment Illinois volunteer infantry on the 29th of February 1864 at Fountain Green, Illinois. This regiment was known as Yate's sharpshooters.  On the 4th of May his regiment joined Sherman's army at Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Then began the campaign to Atlanta, Georgia.  He took part in the battle of Resacs, Dallas and Kenesaw Mountain.  He was active in the seige of Atlanta and was present at its capture.  Was in Sherman's famous march from "Atlanta to the Sea" and in the campaign north through the Carolina's taking part in the battle near Averysboro and at Bentonville, ending at Goldsboro and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Took part in the "grand review" and was mustered out of service at Louisville, Kentucky, on the 11th of July 1865.

While not a professing christian, yet his life reflected the teachings of the Master and he told his Godly companion that he was ready for the end when it should come.

The family is bereft of a kind husband, an indulgent father, the community has lost a good neighbor and a worthy citizen.  We bow to the will of "Him who doeth all things well."  The funeral services were held at the Baptist church of Tennessee Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock.  Dr. Joe Bell, of Galesburg, Illinois officiating.  Interment in Mt. Auburn cemetery, Colchester, Illinois.
