LEAH BELL EBERT 1867-1957
LARKIN C. MASSINGILL ca. 1865-1906

An image of the obituary, clipped from a newspaper.
Leah Bell Ebert was born October 14, 1867.  She was the daughter of Daniel Ebert and Fannie George.  While her obituary stated she was born in Hancock County, Illinois, at the time of her marriage Leah reported she had been born in Hire Township, McDonough County, Illinois. Her parents had been married in McDonough County earlier that year and in 1870 were enumerated in Hire Township.  By 1880 the family had moved to Hancock Township, where Leah spent at least some of her youthful days in what was known as the Majorville neighborhood.

Leah married Larkin C. Massingill on March 30, 1886, at Macomb, McDonough County.  O. F. Piper, Justice of the Peace, performed the nuptials before witnesses Maggie M. Moore and Tiney M. Nicholson.
Marriage Documents

Larkin Massingill, the son of Isaac Massingill and Sarah Groves, was born about 1865 in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, perhaps in the village of Tennessee. In one reference Leah was named as "Mrs. Lark Messingale".

According to Leah's obituary, Larkin died in 1906.  Leah died September 23, 1957, at Magna, Utah, and was buried at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, Salt Lake County, Utah.

The Massingill children were:

i. Carl Massingill, born February 2, 1887, at Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.  He died after April 1, 1930, and probably before September 23, 1957, as he was not mentioned as a survivor in his mother's obituary.  He held various jobs as a railroad employee in the years for which records are available.

In 1920 Carl and his wife, Anna or Hanna (born about 1890 in Illinois, father from Sweden, mother from Denmark) were living Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois.  In 1930 they were in Los Angeles, California.

One son, Robert C. Massingill, born April 3, 1916, in Illinois; died March 15, 1976, in Orange County, California.

ii. Glen E. Massingill, born April 5, 1889 in Illinois.  He died after April 1, 1930, and probably before September 23, 1957, as he, too, was not mentioned in his mother's obituary.

Glen married Ruth Young between 1910 and 1917.  She was born about 1889, the daughter of Morris K. Young and the former Della V. Upright (given name also found as Dellia).  When he registered for Selective Service in 1917, Glen was a resident of Galesburg, was married and reported one child.  He was a sheet metal worker; the registrar noted that Glen had lost his right index finger.

He was widowed in 1918.  A death certificate was issued for Ruth Kirl Massingill, who died on November 21, 1918, in Galesburg.  Their daughter, Louise, born about 1917, was raised by Ruth's parents.

In 1920 Glen was in Salt Lake City with several members of the immediate family.  By 1930 he had returned to central Illinois and was living in Galesburg with his second wife, Blanche.

iii. Minnie Massingill, born October 7, 1891, in Illinois.  Minnie's husband was George Warren Smith, born May 28, 1890, in Troupsburg, Steuben County, New York (according to his WWI Selective Service Registration).  Social Security records show May 28, 1889, as the date of birth.  He died in September of 1972 in Salt Lake City.  Minnie died in Utah in February of 1982.

As of 1930 they had had two sons, Warren, born about 1914, and Carl, born about 1922.

iv. Frank Leslie Massingill, born in Illinois.  His birthdate was recorded as October 1, 1898, when he registered for Selective Service in 1918; Social Security records show October 1, 1897.

In 1930 Frank and wife, Ruth J. (maiden name undetermined, born December 29, 1894, in Illinois), and their two children, Wayne Leslie (March 30, 1924 - July 05, 2008) and Leone B. (born about 1927), were residing in Willow Glen, Santa Clara County, California.  Leah was counted with them as well as with Minnie and George Smith.

When Leah died, Frank's location was given as San Jose, also in Santa Clara County.  Frank died in November of 1967; Ruth died in August of 1974.
