 SIMON THOMAS CALLIHAN 1847-1913
MARGARET ANZONETTA WILLIAMS 1851-1923

Much of the information we have on the descendants of S. T. and Margaret Williams Callihan, is based on the dedicated and detailed research of Goldie Beatrice Read Williams, shared by her granddaughter, Mickie L. Dutcher.

A small, poor quality image of S. T. and Margaret. FOR DISPLAY ON THIS WEBSITE ONLY.Simon Thomas Callihan was born March 8, 1847, in Hancock County, Illinois, the son of John Callihan and Elizabeth Long. He was called Tom, Thomas or S. T.

Thomas was recruited into the Union Army at Fountain Green. He served as a private in Company D, 64th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, also known as Yates' Sharpshooters.

He married Margaret Anzonetta Williams on December 2, 1868, in Hancock County, Illinois.  Marriage License (72k)

Margaret was born on July 17, 1851, in Illinois, probably Hancock County, to Major John Williams and his second wife, Letitia Jones.

The image at the right is from a large group portrait of a Sunday School class at the original Majorville Church.  Uncle Tom and Aunt Nett are among the very few persons identified in the photograph.  Complete Image

Early in their marriage Thomas and Margaret lived near Thomas' father.  By the time of the 1880 Federal census, they were living on the old Williams' homeplace, a farm adjacent (on the north and east) to Majorville Church and Cemetery in Hancock Township, on the northern boundary of Hancock Township.  For a visual representation of the location of this farm, view the Hancock Township Section Map.  Find the entry "1840 John Williams, 57.95 acres".  Thomas and Margaret remained on this farm until about 1889, when they moved to the village of Tennessee, in McDonough County.

A letter written by E. W. Huston, published in The News of Fountain Green, mentions Thomas and Margaret.  There was also a follow-up letter written by A. R. Simmons.

Thomas died at their home in Tennessee on November 22, 1913.  He was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, in McDonough County.  Full Obituary and Tombstones

From an undated Joetta column written by Hetty, this was probably published in the Carthage Republican.

[incomplete, first line taped over] .....greatly surprised and saddened to hear of the sudden and unexpected death of Thomas Callihan, which occured at his home at Tennessee, Saturday morning, Nov. 22, 1913.  Mr. Callihan had lived in our community a greater part of his life and we hope to be able to furnish a proper obituary of his life next week.

Later in the column:
Quite number of our people attended the funeral of Mr. Callihan at Tennessee Monday.

Not long after Thomas died, Margaret and daughter Lutie moved to Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, where Lutie married in 1917.  In 1920 Margaret was making her home with Lutie and Lutie's husband, James Ewalt.  Margaret died in Galesburg on May 27, 1923, and was buried at Mount Auburn in the family plot.  Tombstones
