KITTY JEWEL CALLIHAN & PAUL BLACK
1887-19561880-19__

Kitty Jewel Callihan was born June 18, 1887, probably in the Callihan home located on a farm immediately northeast of Majorville Church.  She was the daughter of Simon Thomas Callihan and Margaret Anzonetta Williams.  About two years later, the family moved from Hancock Township, Hancock County, to the nearby village of Tennessee in McDonough County.

Paul Black was born in Iowa on August 1, 1880, according to his 1918 draft registration.  We tend to believe his parents were Paul and Mary K. Black, he born in Ireland in the mid 1830s, she born in Kentucky about 1846.  They were living in Wells Township, Appanoose County, Iowa, in 1870. By 1880 Mary had apparently perished.  The elder Paul had remarried, the new wife almost 20 years his junior and from Ohio.  Among the several children in the household were a daughter, Mary A., and the youngest, Paul, reported at 3 years of age.

In 1900, the latter Paul apparently was living with Mary A. (by then married, surname Appler) and her husband, still in Wells Township.  Paul was shown to be 23 years of age, which jibes with the 1880 record.  We leave further pursuit and confirmation to the industrious researcher.

Jewel Callihan married Paul Black about 1903.  In 1910 they were living in the village of Tennessee, McDonough County.  By 1918 they had relocated to East Moline in Rock Island County, Illinois.

At least three children were born to Jewel and Paul, a son and two daughters.  According to the research of Goldie Beatrice Read Williams, Jewel and Paul had a second son, but we have not found any records to substantiate this.

The Gazette
Carthage, Illinois - November 1941

Mrs. Jewel Callihan Black who has made her home in California for a number of years went to the Hawaiian Islands with her daughter, Maxine and family and while there has been ill and had two operations.  She would appreciate hearing from friends.  Her address is [illegible] Honolulu

From Goldie Williams' notes, Jewel was at Maxine's home on December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed.

The Gazette
Carthage, Illinois - November 17, 1942

Mrs. Jewel Black has arrived from Hawaii and is at Whittier, California, 535 Darland Street where she will remain until able to make the trip to Galesburg where she will be cared for at the home of her sisters.

In 1948 when Lutie Callihan Black died, her obituary reported that Jewel was living in Galesburg.

Jewel died January 18, 1956, in Los Angeles, California.  She is said to have been buried at Galesburg.

The known children of Jewel Callihan and Paul Black were:

i. Thelma Pauline Black, born about 1905-06, perhaps in or near the village of Tennessee, McDonough County.

ii. Kenneth M. Black, born September 5, 1906, died September 26, 1906, perhaps in or near the village of Tennessee.  He was buried at Majorville Cemetery, Hancock County, where his Callihan and Williams great-grandparents were already laid to rest.

iii. Maxine Black, born about 1911 in Illinois.  Named as Mildred in the 1920 Federal Census, it's our guess her full name was Mildred Maxine.  Per Goldie Williams' research, she died in Hawaii, was cremated, and her ashes were returned to the United States for burial in California.
