MARCUS LEE JAMES 1877-19__

MARIETTA MARTIN
ca. 1881 - 1918
EDNA M. _______
ca. 1888 - 19__

Marcus Lee James was born January 9, 1877, probably in McDonough County, Illinois, the son of William Robert James and Martha B. "Arabella" Moon.

Marietta Martin from a group portrait shared by Mary Jane White. FOR DISPLAY ON THIS WEBSITE ONLY.Marietta Martin, also known as Etta, was the daughter of James L. Martin and Frances Susan Kelly.  She was born about 1881 in Illinois, probably in Hancock Township, Hancock County.

Lee and Marietta were married about 1901 or 1902.  In 1910 they were living in Prairie Township, Hancock County.

Marietta died September 7, 1918, in Carthage Township, Hancock County; burial location undetermined.

Just five days after Marietta's death, Lee was required to register for Selective Service.  His mailing address was recorded as R.F.D. 1, Carthage.  He named his eldest child, Clara, as his nearest relative. The registrar described Lee as being of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Excerpted from the 1929 obituary of Marietta's father: "Lee James, the husband of [Marietta], and Edward S. Wear, Susan's husband, were progressive young farmers of the county, and are still engaged in farming and stock raising.  The demise of Mrs. James left to the care and comfort of the bereaved husband the following children: Clara (now Mrs. Chas. Wright), Harold, Leland, Alma, Ruth, Edwin and Albert."

Lee and Marietta's children were probably all born in Hancock County:

i. Clara F. James, born about 1903.  She married Charles R. Wright, son of Arthur Scott Wright and Alpharetta Russell.

Clara and Charles had three sons:
-- Arnold C. Wright (December 15, 1928 - September 11, 1994)
-- Harold Leland Wright (November 27, 1930 - September 13, 2003)
-- Arthur Wright

ii. Harold M. James, born about 1905.

iii. Unknown James child, born and died before April 15, 1910.  Based on the 1910 census listing for Marietta, which indicated she was the mother of five children, four living.

iv. Leland E. James, born June 9, 1908, died April 21, 1968, in California.

v. Mary Alma James, born February 10, 1910.  Mary Alma (James) Egland died March 4, 1997, in California.

vi. Ruth Frances James, born November 27, 1912.  Ruth Frances (James) Haehnel died March 25, 1992, in California.

vii. Edwin James, born about 1915.

viii. Albert James, born about 1916.

As of April 1, 1930, Lee and Edna had one daughter.
