JOHN KELLY ca. 1807-1862
MARGARET GIBBONS (nee BOYD) 1809-1876

Author - Marcia Farina

John Kelly was born about 1807 in County Killkenny, Ireland.  After coming to America he settled in Hancock County, Illinois, in the area which would eventually be named Hancock Township.  In the fall of 1835 he made two trips to the land office in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, to purchase three parcels of land in Hancock County.  On October 6 he bought 40 acres in Section 11 and 80 acres in Section 2.  He returned on November 2 to buy another 40 acres in Section 11, which brought his holdings to 160 acres.  He paid $1.25 per acre.  Due to the backup in the land office, the certificates of ownership weren't issued until October 10, 1840.  View an illustration of the location of these purchases.

Within the next few years John Kelly married Margaret Gibbons (nee Boyd), who was born in Pennsylvania on December 11, 1809 (date calculated from tombstone inscription).

Margaret was first married to an Irishman named Gibbons.  Their one known child, Margaret Gibbons, was said to be a first cousin to James Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore, 1834-1921, son of Thomas Gibbons and Bridget Walsh.

The known children of John and Margaret Boyd Gibbons Kelly were probably all born at the Kelly home.  The middle son, John, died as a young man.  Frances Susan married and remained in Hancock County for the rest of her life.  The others left Illinois and located in Appanoose County, Iowa; Mary Jane and Patrick eventually moved to San Antonio, Pasco County, Florida.  This migration path is unusual for former Hancock residents of this era, the overwhelming majority of whom moved in a westerly direction.

i. Stephen A. Kelly, born August 30, 1843.  He died in Centerville, Iowa, on May 16, 1908.  His burial location is undetermined.

ii. Mary Jane Kelly, born April 21, 1845, died March 11, 1929, probably in San Antonia, Pasco County, Florida.  Burial at Saint Anthony Cemetery, San Antonio.

iii. John Kelly, born January 8, 1847 (date calculated from tombstone inscription), and died February 2, 1878.  He was buried at St. Simon Cemetery, near Fountain Green, Hancock County.   Last Will and Testament   Obituary  Public Notices   Tombstone

iv. Frances Susan Kelly, born March 10, 1849.  She died October 20, 1935, at Carthage, Hancock County, burial at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.

v. Patrick Kelly, born about 1851.  He died in May of 1935 in San Antonio, Pasco County, Florida.

John Kelly Sr. died September 19, 1862, probably in or near his home in Hancock Township, and was buried in St. Simon Cemetery in Fountain Green Township.  Family records indicate that John Kelly's middle initial was L.  One cemetery reading states that the inscription on his tombstone reads John R [the rest of the name illegible].  Last Will and Testament   Tombstone

Margaret died October 5, 1876, probably in or near Hancock County.  She, too, was buried in St. Simon Cemetery.  Tombstone
