James Flynn Sr.

James Flynn Sr., was born in McDonough County, Illinois, on February 16, 1851, and passed away on January 11, 1933, his death occuring on the anniversary of the death of his only sister, Mrs. Anna Barker, who departed this life on January 11, 1921 and within a few minutes of the same hour.  At an early age, Mr. Flynn began railroading on the Wabash running between Hannibal and Brookfield, Missouri.  On November 11, 1880 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Ann Manion of Hannibal, Missouri.  Eight children were born, the eldest son, Paul, dying in infancy.  In Nov. 1881, Mr. Flynn came to North Platte and hired out as engineer on the Union Pacific.  As a result of an injury to his hand he was pensioned in 1913.  Following his retirement he spent a number of years on a homestead in Arthur County [Nebraska] and from 1923 to 1930 made his home at Butternut, Wisconsin returning again to reside on the site where he had built his first home fifty years ago.  Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons; Fergus of Chicago, Francis of Brooklyn, N. Y. and James of this city and four daughters, Madge Frederick of Medford Oregon, Mary Snyder, Aileen Barraclough and Kathleen Hagerty, all of North Platte. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church at 10 o'clock Friday morning, January 13th with Rev. Patrick McDaid officiating.  Messers Thos. Ryan, James McNeil, James Guyman, Frank Nolan, H. N. Getty and M. C. Hayes, all members of the B. of L. E., [Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers] acted as pall bearers. Interment was made in the North Platte Cemetery.

The best thing that can be said about the penmanship on this page is that it is bold.  Some letters are not consistently formed, most lowercase i's are not dotted, some t's are not crossed.  One surname, apparently Washington, looks like Washnylon.  Rather than transcribing the actual characters, the following is our interpretation of the intent.

The errors in the 1900 listing appear to be a clear case of a transcription error by the enumerator.  He originally wrote locomotive engineer and home ownership entries on the line for Sarah, then crossed them out.

By moving the three birthplace entries for Sarah up to James' line, and the three entries from Mary's line up to Sarah's line, then correcting the children's birth states accordingly, all the entries would be accurate to the best of our knowledge.

The entry showing James came to the United States in 1870 probably should have been placed on the line above James, for the Ireland-born person listed just above him.
