ANN FLYNN & JAMES BARKER

Thanks to Gretchen Flynn for the photograph and information on Ann and her family.

Ann Flynn was born about January 1848 in Ireland, the daughter of James Flynn and Jane Frances Wybrant.

She married James Barker on October 12, 1869, in McDonough County, Illinois.  Accompanying their marriage license was an affidavit signed by Ann's brother, John, attesting that James "Barclay" was over the age of 21, and that Ann Flynn was over the age of 18.  It appears that James' surname may have first been written as Barclay on the license and then corrected to Barker.  Marriage documents  (59k, 33k)

James K. P. Barker was born in Indiana about 1845, the son of Noble and Margaret Barker. The family lived in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana for a number of years.  Noble, Margaret and at least three of their sons, George, James and David, came to Illinois between 1860 and 1869. In 1870, Noble, Margaret and David, and George and his family were living in the village of Lamoine, McDonough County.

Ann and James parted ways, apparently between 1873 and 1880.  In 1880 Ann was living with her widowed brother, John, and that listing is the only one in which she was shown to be divorced. Perhaps John gave that information to the enumerator, because in subsequent years, Ann, presumably, reported herself to be a widow, the stigma of divorce being too great to bear.  By that same census year, James Barker was living with his parents in Ottawa County, Kansas. James was reported as a widower.

A photo of Ann's tombstone.

Ann Flynn Barker died January 11, 1921, at North Platte, and was buried there in the North Platte Cemetery beside her mother.

The known children of Ann Flynn and James Barker were:

i. James Barker, born about 1867 in Illinois, probably McDonough County.

ii. Margaret Barker, born about 1871 in Illinois, probably McDonough County.

iii. Mary C. Barker, born about 1873 in Illinois, probably McDonough County.  Known as Kate, her middle name was probably a variation of Catherine.

It appears that Ann was enumerated twice in 1850, once with her parents and also in the home of Ann Wybrant.
