JAMES L. MARTIN 1845-1929
FRANCES SUSAN KELLY 1849-1935

From the Scofield History of Hancock County, Illinois, 1921, pp. 1284-1285

MARTIN, James L., justice of the peace at Carthage, Ill., and one of the substantial and reliable men of Hancock County, was born in Woodford County, Ky., November 4, 1845, a son of John and Mildred S. (Vincent) Martin who came to Hancock County in 1861, buying land here that had a gristmill on it.  He [John Martin] conducted the mill in connection with his farming.  For many years he was active in the Presbyterian Church.  A Republican, he held the office of school director. He and his wife had three children, as follows: James L.; Marietta, who is the wife of Joel T. Boaz [sic], a veteran of the Civil War, in which Mr. Boaz [sic] served for three years; and John R., who was born November 7, 1858 and died February 23, 1875.

Judge Martin was reared on the homestead in Hancock County, and attended the early schools of Kentucky.  During his boyhood he assisted in operating the gristmill and in farming.  On April 22, 1873, he was married to Frances S. Kelley who was born in Hancock County, a daughter of John Kelley.  After their marriage, Judge and Mrs. Martin moved on a farm they owned and here were engaged in farming until 1905 when they moved to Carthage, selling the farm.  A strong Republican, Judge Martin has been active in his party and has served the public as town clerk, assessor of Hancock Township, and for the past ten years has been a justice of the peace for Carthage.  A man of level judgment, his decisions are reversed by the higher courts, and his honesty and careful weighing of testimony have gained him the friendship of all with whom he has come into contact.

Judge and Mrs. Martin have had four children, namely: James E., who is in Idaho; Susan M., who is the wife of E. S. Wear, a farmer of Adams County; Marietta, who died September 7, 1918, was the wife of Lee James, owner of a farm three miles southeast of Carthage; and Stephen L., who is interested in railroad work at Denver, Col.  The fraternal connections of Judge Martin are with the Masonic order, he being a past master of Hancock Lodge No. 20, A. F. & A. M., and he also belongs to Inglewell Commandery No. 75, is a Thirty-second degree Mason, and is a member of Bentley Lodge No. 412, I. O. O. F.  The Presbyterian Church holds his membership and he is a deacon.  Mrs. Martin is a Catholic.

Fannie and James were married on April 22, 1873, by Thomas F. Mangan, Catholic priest.  Marriage License

Named as Lewis Martin, he was listed as a member of the Board of Directors of Woodville School during the 1900-1901 school term.

James died April 18, 1929, and was buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.  D. D. Meaux wrote an obituary and stated that James' middle name was Louis, that he known as "Lou" and that he had died in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Ed and Susan Wear.  (Read the obituary on Ron Bryant's website.)  State of Illinois records indicate that James' death certificate was prepared with the name James Lewis Martin and that he died in Pontoosuc Township, Hancock County.

Fannie died October 20, 1935, at Carthage and was also buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery.  Albert Wear, Fannie's grandson, was the informant for her death certificate, and on that document James' middle name was spelled Louis.  Death Certificate  Louis was also the spelling used in Fannie's obituary.  Obituary

The picture below is shared by Mary Jane (Siepel) White.  The Martins were neighbors and close friends of John and Martha (Ellis) Siepel, evidenced by this group portrait of their children.

The Martin children were probably all born in Hancock Township.

i. James Edwin Martin, born September 9, 1876.  Ed, who apparently never married, went west to seek his fortune.  In 1910 he was a miner and prospecter in the vicinity of the Jarbidge Mining Camp in Elko County, Nevada.  When he registered for Selective Service in 1918, he was working as a pipe fitter in Casper, Wyoming; he named his father as his nearest relative. The 1921 Scofield biography reported Ed was in Idaho.  In April of 1929 he was said to be living in Eureka, Utah.  In 1930 he was boarding at a home in Salt Lake City, Utah, working as a miner.  When his mother died in late 1935, Ed was reported to have died in Tucson, Arizona, in 1932.

ii. Susan Margaret Martin, born November 14, 1878.  She died December 7, 1959, at Carthage, Hancock County, interment at St. Marys Cemetery, St. Mary's Township, also in Hancock County.

iii. Marietta Martin, also known as Etta, born about 1881, died September 7, 1918, in Carthage Township, also in Hancock County.  Burial location undetermined.

iv. Stephen Lincoln Martin, born October 3, 1884.  He died February 18, 1966, in Denver, Colorado.

v. John Morris Martin, died in infancy.  Not mentioned in the Scofield biography of his father, John was named in the obituaries of both of his parents.
