THOMAS R. CAMBRON 1819 - 1891
MARY ANN CAMPBELL ca. 1846 - 19__

The Republican
Carthage, Illinois
June 3, 1891
From Country Jake's column

The sudden death of Mr. Thomas Cambron, near Joetta a few days since, removes another old settler of prominence.  Mr. C. resided in early life in Ft. Green township.  His age was about 70 years.  Leaves a wife, two daughters, two brothers and two sisters.  His sister, Mrs. Eliza Willis, lives in this township; brothers and other sister in Nauvoo.  Mr. Cambron was a quiet, peaceable citizen, having the lasting respect and confidence of all his neighbors and business associates.  Was a devout Catholic all his life, much loved by the members of his church, contributing o [sic] his means to enhance its welfare.  The writer has known him well for 45 years and is prepared to say a good man is gone from among us.

Among the burials reported in the old Catholic Cemetery in Tennessee Township, there is a Thomas R. Cambron, born in Grayson County, Kentucky, died May 21, 1871, age 71 years, 6 months, 11 days.  We suspect that the year on that tombstone has been read incorrectly, that the year is actually 1891, and that the man buried there was the Thomas Cambron named in this obituary.  Calculated with 1891 and the above age at death, he was born November 10, 1819.

Thomas R. Cambron was the son of Thomas and Jane (Queen) Cambron, both of whom are buried at Lincoln Cemetery near Fountain Green.

Thomas R. married Mary Ann Campbell in Hancock County on November 18, 1869.  Marriage License

Mary Ann, born about 1846, was the daughter of John and Mary Campbell, who also lie buried at Lincoln Cemetery. Mary Ann was born and raised in Hancock Township. One of Mary Ann's brothers was John Campbell, who died June 29, 1911.  His obituary mentioned one surviving sister whom we believe was Mary Ann Cambron.

Thomas and Mary had two daughters.  Both died young, leaving no children.

i. Mary Jane Cambron, born in 1873, died in 1900.  She was buried in the old Catholic Cemetery.

ii. Laura Maud Cambron, born in 1878, died in 1898, also buried at the old Catholic Cemetery.

In 1900 Mary was counted as a boarder in the home of James F. Willis and his wife, the former Ada L. James.  Also in the household was the widowed Louisa Cambron Willis, Thomas Cambron's sister.

In 1910 Mary was living in Blandinsville Township, McDonough County, in the home of two nephews, George and Joseph Mercer.  It is unclear whether Mary was being paid to do their housekeeping or working elsewhere.  In 1920 the nephews were in the same location but Mary was no longer with them.  We believe Mary died between 1910 and 1920 but have no hard reference to substantiate this.
