"Link" Shifley's parents were Christian Gottleib Scheifley and Caroline Augusta Holoch.  The parents of Elizabeth "Lillie" Cowan were William Cowan and Mary A. Bright, from Nova Scotia and England, respectively.

The young couple went to Macomb, McDonough County, on March 16, 1887, to get their marriage license, and were married on the same day at Tennessee by Rev. T. J. Wood, from the Methodist Episcopal Church in Colchester.  Witnesses were Samuel Cowan and Addie Cowan.

The Shifley children were probably all born at the family home in Tennessee Township.  They were:

i.	Rollie Lincoln Shifley, born April 7, 1888, died in 1963, burial at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County.
ii.	Beulah Elizabeth Shifley, born October 16, 1892, died January 30, 1893, burial at Hills Grove Cemetery.
iii.	Mabel L. Shifley, born May 1, 1895, died January 13, 1983, burial at Mount Auburn.  Mabel was teaching at Centennial School in 1914.
iv.	William Garrett Shifley, born February 23, 1897, died August 4, 1979, burial at Mount Auburn.
v.	Gilbert Lee Shifley, born June 30, 1904.  After many years residence near Ryegate in Golden Valley County, Montana, he died in Harlowton, Montana, on August 15, 2000.  Burial at Ryegate Cemetery.
vi.	Howard A. Shifley, born October 7, 1905, died April 24, 1988.  He married Wanda Z. Clark, about 1930.  She was born June 29, 1912, probably in Lamoine Township, McDonough County, the daughter of Walter Lane Clark and Bessie Estella Myers (or Myres).  Wanda died August 29, 1981.  Howard and Wanda are both buried at Mount Auburn.
