Ethan A. Martin and his twin, Charles, were born August 6, 1856 in Barbour County, Virginia, sons of Washington Martin and Matilda Cool, natives of Virginia.  By 1870 Washington and Matilda, with at least nine children, had moved west and settled in Carthage Township, Hancock County, Illinois.

As an adult Ethan was most frequently named as E. A. in the references we have found thus far. Although he usually listed West Virginia as his and his parents' birth state, West Virginia did not become a state until 1863.

Naomi E. Stowe was born in either late 1859 or early 1860, probably in Wayne Township, Champaign County, Ohio, the daughter of Richard and Mary Stowe.  By the time of the 1870 census, the young family had moved to St. Mary's Township, Hancock County, Illinois.

On March 7, 1878, Ethan and Naomi were married.

In the 1880 Federal Census E. A. was a widower with an infant daughter, Florence.  They were living with E. A.'s sister and brother-in-law, Louisa and John F. Cauthorn, in Calvin Township, Jewell County, Kansas.

Ethan and Naomi's daughter:

i. Florence Martin, born about 1879 in Illinois.  She was counted twice in the 1880 census, with her father and also with her maternal grandparents in Browns Creek, Jewell County, Kansas.

It appears she remained with the Stowes, who returned to Hancock County by 1900.  They were living in Carthage.  Florence was a school teacher.

By 1910 Mary Stowe was widowed.  She and Florence were still in Carthage and Florence was still teaching.

E. A. married Cora Adell Pitkin on January 31, 1882.  She was the daughter of Levi and Frances Pitkin.

Cora was born in New York on October 20, 1854, died January 30, 1887, in California.

This marriage produced two children, both born in California:

i. Rosa E. Martin, born about 1883.  In March of 1934 when Bertha Frank Rees died, Rosa was named as Rosa Green of Wichita, Kansas.

ii. Allen Levi Martin, born December 8, 1884.  He married Lulu May Dalbey on July 2, 1909, at Knight's Landing, Yolo County, California.

Lulu was born March 1, 1889, in California, the daughter of Harrison Dalbey and Isabel Hoffman.

Lulu died January 25, 1948, in Yolo County.  Allen died September 24, 1955, in Siskiyou County, California.  They are both buried at Winters Cemetery, Yolo County.

Back in Illinois in 1889, E. A. married Mrs. Lillian Frank (nee Garrett), widow of Theadore Frank. Follow the link to Theadore for earlier information on Lillian.

Martin - Frank Marriage Documents

E. A. and Lillian lost their first child, Forrest, born in 1890.  In 1900 they were located in Lyon Township, Knox County, Missouri.  They had two sons, Charley and Willard.  Also living with them were Rosa and Allen, and Lillian's son, Edwin Frank.

In 1910 E. A. and Lillian were in Vacaville Township, Solano County, California; in 1920 they were in neighboring Silveyville Township.

Lillian died May 4, 1920, in Solano County, near Vacaville.  E. A. survived until December 13, 1927.  They are both buried at Winters Cemetery, Yolo County.

Lillian was a member of and one-time president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and was a Methodist.

Ethan and Lillian's children:

i. Forrest Martin, born in 1890.

ii. Charles Luther Martin, born November 15, 1894, in Missouri.  He died July 9, 1963, in Solano County, California.

iii. Francis Willard Martin, born April 5, 1898, in Missouri.  He died August 30, 1954, in Napa County, California.  He married Berenice (maiden name undetermined); September 29, 1898 - March 25, 1974.  She was cremated.  Their remains lie in the Martin plot at Winters Cemetery.
