HENRY THOMAS JAMES 1863-1939
MARGARET E. SAMMONS 1864-1947

 

Henry Thomas James, son of Thomas J. James and Emily Bean, was born in 1863 in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois.

Margaret E. Sammons was born February 3, 1864, in Illinois, perhaps in Hancock County, to John and Catherine Sammons.  Catherine's maiden name is found as McCarty, Carty and, on Henry and Margaret's Board of Health document, Cardie.

Henry and Margaret were married in McDonough County on October 30, 1884, by O. F. Piper, Justice of the Peace.  Marriage Documents  (89k, 85k)

Over the next 16 years they had seven children, one of whom died in infancy.  They were counted in the 1900 Federal Census in Tennessee Township.  Three more children arrived in the early 1900s.

Prior to 1910 the Sammonses relocated to Fountain Green Township in Hancock County.  In 1909 Henry was President of the School Board for Fountain Green Public School District No. 98. Daughter Alvia and son Herman were students at Fountain Green.  Follow this link to view the 1909 school souvenir booklet.

The year 1920 found the family in adjacent Hancock Township, and by 1930 they were in Harmony Township.

Henry died June 16, 1939.  Margaret died March 22, 1947.  They are both buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County.

The James - Sammons children were:

i. Blanche Mae James, born June 24, 1885, died July 8, 1974.  She is buried at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville, McDonough County.
 
ii. Edward M. James, born December 17, 1886.
 
iii. Lois Ellen James, born January 23, 1889, died July 14 or 15, 1917, at Fountain Green, Hancock County.  July 14 is the date shown on State of Illinois death records online, July 15 is the date reportedly on her tombstone and quoted in the obituary for Lois' sister, Lota Mearl.  They are buried in the same plot at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
 
iv. Herman J. James, born October 1, 1891.
 
v. Vilas James, died September 19, 1893.
 
vi. Alvia E. James, born February 18, 1894.  (Found also as Alva, Alvie, Alvira and Elvia.)  She died November 29, 1985, burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
 
vii. Vearl James, born April 20, 1898, died in May of 1973 at Macomb, McDonough County.
 
viii. Hubert Henry "Jesse" James, born May 11, 1901.  He died August 15, 1995, at Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa.  Burial at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison.
 
ix. Lora Pearl James, born July 29, 1904.
 
x. Lota Mearl James, born July 29, 1904, died October 1, 1923, in McDonough County.  Burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
