NELLIE C. NEWLAND ca. 1868 - 19__ | |
| Thomas Black Huston was born September 19, 1850, in Pennsylvania, probably in Upper Dickinson Township, Cumberland County. His parents, On January 3, 1876, a marriage license was issued at Carthage, Hancock County, for Thomas and Miss Sarah B. Campbell, of LaHarpe. They were married on the 5th of January at LaHarpe by Thomas M. Walker, the well-known Fountain Green minister. Sarah Belle Campbell was born at Fannettsburg, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Sarah Belle has left us with a puzzle. Family records indicate she was born March 18, 1841. This date is generally supported by the 1850 and 1870 censuses. (Unfortunately the Campbell family is missing from the existing 1860 census records.) But when the marriage documents were prepared in 1876, her age was reported as 25, and in the 1880 census she was recorded as being 28. It appears she was fudging on her age by 10 years. It will be interesting to see what was inscribed on her tombstone. Two sons were born to Thomas and Sarah:
From The Republican, Carthage, Illinois, the Fountain Green column, March 30, 1892: Thos. Huston, of this township, has moved on the Thomas Thompson farm, south of Carthage, which he bought a short time ago. We are sorry to lose Tom, as he was a good citizen, and his neighbors there will find him always ready to lend a helping hand. Sarah Campbell Huston died December 14, 1895, and was buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage, Hancock County. On August 5, 1897, Thomas married Nellie C. Newland of Carthage. H. B. Ward performed the marriage at Elvaston. Witnesses were Oscar Love and Augusta L. Ward. Thomas gave his age as 47, Nellie was 29. Nellie was the daughter of A little over a year previously, William, by then about 19, had married Ethel K. Newland, also a daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth. So when Thomas married Nellie (who was about ten years older than Ethel), William's sister-in-law became his stepmother. Thomas and Nellie had at least one child together. The entry in the 1900 census, apparently in error, reported that she was the mother of 4 children, 1 living. The 1910 entry showed one child, deceased. Thomas died January 18, 1924, at Carthage, and was buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery. Nellie was residing in Carthage in 1930; her widowed father was making his home with her. |
