![]() William Lewis Huntley was born July 14, 1844, in Meigs County, Ohio, the son of John Huntley and Louisa Connor. Louisa died about 1848 and John remarried. In 1850 John and his second wife, Mrs. Hannah Wybrant, and five of John and Louisa's children were living in Hancock County, probably in Section 22 where John operated a mill on Crooked Creek. It was in this locale that Will grew up and attended school. In 1870 he was a laborer at Camp Harney, Grant County, Oregon, located in the eastern half of the state. This military outpost (which would later become Fort Harney and the area would become part of Harney County, Oregon) was counted on one census page with the following divisions: lumber camp, haying camp, garrison, officers' families. Will was one of the seven men in the haying camp. (Some web authors have connected the wrong William Huntley (born in Missouri) to John and Louisa. That William Huntley did happen to be counted immediately following John in 1870, but he was not John and Louisa's son.) In 1877 Will married Will's residence at the time of the marriage was recorded as Ellensburg, Curry County, Oregon. He and Mary Jane were married in Hancock County on June 14. Follow the link to Mary Jane to view their wedding portrait and marriage license. Will and Mary Jane and her boys returned to Oregon. Will and Mary Jane became parents of a son the following year.
In 1900 Will and his son, John Stanley, were residing in Sanel Township, Mendocino County, California. Will had given up the rough life of a miner and become a notary public and (if not then, later) a Justice of the Peace. Will remained in Sanel Township for the rest of his life. He died September 5, 1925, at Ukiah, also in Mendocino County.
Wednesday, September 9, 1925 Judge Wm. Huntley died at the county hospital here Saturday following an illness of long standing. Mr. Huntley resided for many years at Hopland, serving that community as justice of the peace. He was 81 years old and is survived by a son and a daughter. Judge Huntley was a graduate of Harvard University and well known in Mendocino county. He was buried in the local cemetery.
We are unable to account for the daughter mentioned in the obituary. |
