Carthage, Illinois - July 28, 1944
He was married to Miss Myrtle Leona Robinson in Carthage Dec. 28, 1898. A son, Audrey Lee, born to this union, passed away in infancy. For a number of years Mr. Houtchens was engaged in farming near Webster, this county, and in 1912, he and Mrs. Houtchens moved to Carthage where they have since resided. Mr. Houtchens was a devoted husband, a loyal friend and an accommodating neighbor, always ready and desirous of doing a favor for anyone in need. Mrs. George Lee Houtchens Mrs. George L. Houtchens, whose maiden name was Myrtle Leona Robinson, was a daughter of Marion and Martha Jane Mosley Robinson. She was born at Webster, this county, August 26, 1874. Mrs. Houtchens had been in declining health for several months and last Sunday night she was taken to St. Joseph hospital, Keokuk, Iowa, where she passed away Tuesday, July 25, at 12:35 p. m. She is survived by two brothers, Homer Robinson of Colchester, and Ernest Robinson of Carthage and a brother-in-law, Frank Pennock of Dallas City, and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Mrs. Frank Pennock, and a brother, John Robinson, preceded her in death. For six years Myrtle L. Robinson was one of the successful teachers in the schools of Ft. Green township, and Dec. 28, 1898 she was married to Mr. Houtchens. A son, Audrey Lee, born to this union, passed away in infancy. Since 1912 the family home has been in Carthage. Mrs. Houtchens was a member of the Carthage Presbyterian church and when health permitted was a regular attendant at church services and a worker in the Sunday school. She was always greatly interested in the Primary Department of the Sunday School and for a number of years served as Chairman of the Cradle Roll. Double funeral services were held for Mr. and Mrs. Houtchens yesterday afternoon, July 27, at 2 o'clock at the Elms, Rev. Owen Wilson officiated. Burial in Moss Ridge cemetery. There have been two previous double funerals held in Carthage. In December 1911 a double funeral was held for Marguerite and Frances daughters of Mr. and Mrs. George Dorsey, who were drowned in a pond just north of town. On January 8 and 11, 1929, occurred the deaths of Addison Benjaman [sic] and Emma M. Mathews, well known Carthage citizens and double funeral services were held for them. George and Myrtle's son:
