Mrs. Rose Mourning, 87, a resident of LaHarpe for the past several years, passed away after a long illness at the Wright home last Thursday, October 31, 1946, and was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon in the Basco cemetery after funeral services in the Banks funeral home. Rev. James Q. Moore officiated.

Grandsons acted as pall bearers at the funeral service.  They were Merrill and Merrill, Jr., Dunham, Keith Dunham, James, Lyle and Ronald Stamp, all of Stronghurst.

Rose Alpha, daughter of John and Mary Hawkins, was born August 13, 1859, at Basco, Illinois, and passed away at LaHarpe, Illinois, October 31, 1946, at the age of 87 years, 2 months, and 18 days.

She was the second of a family of nine children, two sisters and three brothers having preceded her in death.

In 1879 she was united in marriage with Frank Cachieux.  To this union was born one son, Clarence, who passed away at the age of ten. Her husband passed away in 1882.

Later she was married to Dr. W. H. Mourning.  To this union three daughters were born, Edna, Nellie and Effie.  Their father passed away when these children were quite small.

At an early age Mrs. Mourning united with the Methodist church of Basco and was a faithful member as long as health permitted. She had been an invalid for the past eight years, being confined to her bed for four years.

The following close relatives survive; three daughters, Mrs. Edna Dunham of LaHarpe; Mrs. Nellie Stamp of Stronghurst and Mrs. Effie Salter of Hannibal, Missouri; two sisters, Mrs. Byrd Collins of Moline, Illinois and Mrs. Della Smith of Lamar, Colorado; one brother, William Hawkins of Stockport, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Rose Hawkins is found as Rosalpha, Rosealpha and Rose Alpha, and with an initial C perhaps standing for Clark.  Her parents were John P. Hawkins and Mary Elizabeth Clark, who married in Hancock County on March 1, 1857, and farmed in Bear Creek Township for a number of years. It's likely that Rose was born on the home farm rather than in the village of Basco proper.

According to the inscription on his tombstone at West Cemetery in Bear Creek Township near Basco, Frank Cacheux was born June 20, 1857, died January 6, 1883.  He was the son of Constant Cacheux and Catharine Clerce, both of whom immigrated from France in the early 1850s. Dr. William H. Mourning was the son of Samuel and Nancy Lyon Mourning.  He was born in Adair County, Kentucky, about 1849.  By 1860, Samuel and Nancy had brought their family to Bear Creek Township.  Mourning census listings 1850-1880

William married first Miss Addie M. Seger, daughter of John G. Seger and Mary Pendergast. John Seger performed the ceremony for his daughter and William at Basco on October 31, 1880. Marriage Documents

Addie was born January 7, 1861, in Illinois, and died less than three years after her marriage, on April 25, 1883.  She was also buried at West Cemetery near Basco.

Rose and William were married at Basco on March 22, 1885, by Reverend T. W. Greer.

Excerpted from a news item, probably from The LaHarper:

Presents Diploma & Certificate to Library:

The framed lambskin diploma and Illinois State License of the late Dr. W. C. Mourning [sic], formerly an MD in LaHarpe [crossed out, Basco written on the clipping] has been presented to the La Harpe Carnegie Library by Dr. B. I. Mueller.  W. C. Mourning [sic] graduated in 1877 from Keokuk Medical and Surgical College and practiced medicine in La Harpe after that.  He and his family then moved to Colorado, where Dr. Mourning died during a typhoid epidemic. His widow, Rose, returned to Illinois, residing in Basco, where she raised their four children. One of the daughters was the mother of Mrs. Clair Beckwith, La Harpe, and Merrill Dunham, Decatur and Keith Dunham, Peoria. Another granddaughter is Madeline Dowell, Stronghurst, Ill. ~ ~ ~ ~Although Dr. Mueller did not know Dr. Mourning, he was the family physician of Rose Mourning upon her return to Illinois.

Excerpted from Roger Mourning - His Book, by Kenneth Mourning Waddell, 1969, page 86:

Dr. William Henry Mourning was the son of Samuel and Nancy Lyon Mourning was born in Adair County, Kentucky in 1849 and came to Hancock County, Illinoi[s] with his father at an early age, and grew to young manhood on the farm near Basco.  He became an excellent physician and practiced in this area.  He is said to have also operated a drug store in Basco [a correction from Bowen], Illinois.  He married Rose Hawkins and they had three daughters. He and his family were the first of the Mournings to go to Colorado and he settled with his family at Grenada where he practiced for many years.  It was a hard life for him as he had to travel long distances to see his patients.  About 1897 he died in [Granada] from pneumonia and Joshua, with sons Elmer and Burchard drove to Granada in a wagon and brought the body back to Lamar [Colorado] for interment there.

Rose was said to have been a very lovely person.  Some time after the Doctor's death she returned to Basco Ill with her children.  These were;
Opal Mourning, said to be married and living in La Harpe,
Nellie Mourning, married to a Mr. Stump and lived in Stronghurst
Effie Mourning

Rose Mourning later re-married, this time to a Mr. Casheny in Lamar where she returned and later died.

Corrections to the above include:
- Rose was first married to Frank Cacheux in Hancock County, Illinois.
- Rose did not marry a Mr. Casheny in Lamar.
- "Opal" was Edna.
- Nellie married Perry Stamp.
- Rose died in LaHarpe, Illinois.
In addition, the statement that William practiced for many years in Colorado seems to have been a bit of an overstatement. William was enumerated in Hancock County in 1880, he and Rose were married in 1885, all their daughters were reported to have been born in Illinois between 1886 and 1893, and William died circa 1897.
