CYRUS GIPE ca. 1855-1912
MARY MARGARET HYDE 1859-1928

Cyrus Gipe was born in Dauphine County, Pennsylvania, circa 1855.  Mary Margaret Hyde was born in Pennsylvania, March 21, 1859.  They married August 5, 1876.

In 1918 Cyrus and Margaret's son, Harvey, registered for the draft.  He stated that Cyrus was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  Casual research indicates that the future city of Harrisburg was planned and laid out in 1785.  It is located on the western side of Dauphin County.  Based on census records and the following biography of Cyrus' brother, it's far more likely that Cyrus was born in Derry Township, Dauphin County.  In 1860 mail service to Derry Township came out of Harrisburg; in 1870 mail delivery was provided from nearby Hummelstown.

GIPE, JEREMIAH E., farmer, was born in Derry township, Dauphin county, Pa., January 6, 1872; son of Peter and Caroline (Brown) Gipe.  His paternal grandparents were both natives of Dauphin county; and both died in this county, the grandfather aged eighty-four years.

Peter Gipe, father of Jeremiah E., was born in Derry township, in 1823.  He learned shoemaking in his youth and followed that calling for many years.  Later in life he was engaged in farming.  His wife, Caroline, daughter of Christian Brown, was born in Derry township, in December, 1829.  Five of their ten children are living: Henry; Cyrus; Mary, wife of Levi Curry; Samuel, and Jeremiah.  Mr. Peter Gipe is still farming, and is strong and active at the ripe age of seventy-five.  His wife still enjoys life at the age of sixty-nine.  In his political views Mr. Gipe is a good, solid Democrat.  He belongs to the United Brethren church, and his wife is a faithful member of the Dunkard church.

Jeremiah E. Gipe attended the township schools and industriously used the means to secure an education.  After school days were ended he remained on the farm and assisted his father in its work.  Mr. Gipe was married, December 12, 1892, to Miss Alice, daughter of Elias and Sarah (Wolf) Buck.  They have one daughter, Annie E. Since 1892 Mr. Gipe has been continuously and diligently engaged in cultivating the home farm, and has been successful.  He is up with the times and is a progressive and enterprising farmer.

In 1880 Cyrus and Margaret were counted in Astoria Township, Fulton County, Illinois.  With them were two of the ten children eventually born to them: Mary, the eldest, born in Pennsylvania, and Samuel, born in Fulton County in 1879.

In 1900 the family was living in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois.  If the obituary of daughter Caroline was accurate, it's our surmise that the family moved to Hancock County around 1895.

Cyrus and Margaret's children were:

i. Mary M. Gipe, born about 1877 in Pennsylvania.  She died before June 1, 1900.

ii. Samuel Henry Gipe was born September 19, 1879.  When he registered for the draft in 1918, Samuel stated he was born in Vermont, Fulton County.  The form did not offer a space to report whether it was Vermont Township or the village of Vermont (located in the southwest corner of Vermont Township).  Vermont Township lies immediately north of Astoria Township, where the family was residing in 1880.

From The Carthage Republican, October 5, 1898, Chat's Webster column: "Samuel Guipe who has been in Vermont, Ill., all summer came home for a short visit last week, accompanied by Pearl Dennis."

Samuel was married about 1907 to Louisa Ann Schroder.  She was born about 1880 in Illinois, the daughter of Thomas F. Schroder and Amanda Hills.  Louisa died in Eldorado Township, McDonough County, Illinois, at the age of 60 on February 14, 1941.  Samuel died October 28, 1947, in Vermont, Fulton County.

iii. Andrew J. Gipe, born about 1880 in Illinois.
Andy married Clara E. Adams about 1902.  Born February 16, 1882, she was the daughter of Alfred Adams and Anna M. Jones.  Andy and Clara lived for many years in Hancock Township. Andy survived his brother, Otis; Clara died in October of 1979.  Census Listings

iv. Fary A. (or Fairy) Gipe, usually called Anna, born about 1882 in Illinois, died before late June 1952. About 1903 she married Cyrus Herr Rohrer from Fulton County; he was born January 25, 1876, in Illinois, the son of Christian and Elizabeth Rohrer, both originally from Pennsylvania.  Anna and Cyrus lived in Wichita, Kansas.

v. Sarah E. "Sadie" Gipe, born June 28, 1883, in or near Vermont, Fulton County, Illinois. She died April 3, 1962, at Macomb, McDonough County, and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in that city.

vi. Dolly M. Gipe, born about 1886.  She died after April 29, 1964.

vii. Cyrus Otis Gipe, born January 6, 1889.  His obituary stated that he was born in McDonough County, Illinois, but we tend to think that was incorrect, that the Gipes didn't leave Fulton County until after their next child, Caroline, was born in December of 1894.  Otis died in late June 1952 and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Macomb.

viii. Caroline Gipe, was born December 5, 1894, in or near Vermont, Fulton County, according to her obituary.  She died April 29, 1964, in Dunedin, Florida.  Her remains were returned to Hancock County for burial at Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage.

ix. Harvey Bryan Gipe, born February 2, 1897, in Hancock Township, Hancock County.  He died after April 29, 1964.  He married Dora Londrie around 1917.  She was the daughter of Lewis Henry Londrie and Rosa Roberts.     Census Listings, Draft Registration

x. Tenth child, born and died before June 1, 1900, based on Margaret's obituary and also on the 1900 and 1910 census listings.  In both years it was reported that she was the mother of 10 children, 8 living.

Cyrus died August 10, 1912.  At some point after Cyrus' death, Mary, Samuel and Harvey left Hancock County and lived at Rural Route 3, Vermont, in Fulton County.  Both sons listed that address on their 1918 draft registration forms, and Harvey listed his mother as his closest relative at the same address.  In 1920 Samuel's family was counted in Eldorado Township, McDonough County; Mary was making her home with him.  Harvey and family were close by.

MRS. MARGARET GIPE

Quite a number from here attended the funeral of Mrs. Margaret Gipe, held at the Ostrich funeral home in Carthage, Satuday, at 2 p. m.  Mrs. Gipe lived for many years in the community near the Liberty church*, a few miles south of town, and she has many old friends here yet who have felt great sorrow and sympathy for her during her long illness, as she was a great sufferer.  She was always kind and helpful to all in distress, and she was greatly missed when she gave up her old home to be cared for by her children.  May her body rest in peace.
