Franklin Fortney was born April 28, 1852, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, son of Samuel Fortney and Sarah Ann Miller.  According to the obituary of Frank's older brother, Samuel Fortney, the family came to Illinois in 1855.

Margaret Frances "Fannie" McConnell was born May 19, 1855, the daughter of Alexander Walker McConnell and Mary Evelyn C Walker.  Although Fannie's obituary stated she was born in Fountain Green, it's more likely she was born at the family home in Section 29 of Fountain Green Township - the first section west of the section in which Fountain Green is located.  See Fountain Green Township Section Map for an illustration.

Frank and Fannie were married on March 26, 1878, in Fountain Green Township, by the Reverend Thomas M. Walker.  Marriage Documents

They initially lived in Fountain Green Township, then relocated to Pilot Grove Township, near LaCrosse.  "Junius", writing about local residents beset with LaGrippe or colds in the LaCrosse column in The Republican of January 29, 1890, reported: "Mrs. Frank Fortney was seriously sick last week, and is very little better at this writing."  Excerpted from "Plowboy's" LaCrosse column in The Republican, June 10, 1891: "There are many improvements on the way in this part of the country. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Frank Fortney is also building a fine house."

Fannie died in her home on May 22, 1916; Frank died 7 months later, also at home, on December 27, 1916.  They are buried at LaHarpe City Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock County.
