FOUNTAIN GREEN -- (By The Quill Correspondent) -- This community was shocked and grieved to learn Saturday afternoon that Alton Curry of Peoria had drowned a few hours earlier in the pond on the Joe Lenix farm southwest of Webster. Mr. Curry, who had been in poor health due to a heart condition, had been taking a leave of absence from his work at the Caterpillar Co. in Peoria and had spent considerable time in recent weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Curry, here in Fountain Green. After having been here for a few days he had returned home, then decided to come back for the week-end. Being an enthusiastic fisherman, he drove immediately to one of his favorite fishing retreats, upon reaching this area, apparently bent upon catching a "mess" of fish before surprising his parents with his presence. A few hours later, Melvin Latherow and Herschel Caldwell, two local fishermen, also sought out this fishing retreat, and were horrified to find Mr. Curry's body floating on the surface of the pond. It is thought the fact that he was wearing a rain coat prevented the body from sinking. From the position of the body it is believed that he suffered either a heart attack or a dizzy spell to which he was subject and toppled face down into the water. The deepest sympathy is extended to his aged parents, as well as to other family members who mourn his tragic passing. Funeral services and burial took place in Peoria Tuesday of this week. Coroner W. V. Elder has scheduled an inquest for tonight (Wednesday) in the Fountain Green town hall, where evidence will be heard by a jury composed of Albert Barr, Kenneth Holloway, Clifton Duffy, Marion Barr, Joe Lenix and Bob Shutwell. The pond where Curry's body was found is on land owned by Joe Lenix about two and one-half miles southwest of Fountain Green. Latherow and Caldwell, upon seeing the Peorian's body, noted his car parked nearby. They summoned aid immediately. John Alton Curry was 61 years of age. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Curry of Fountain Green, one son and one daughter, William Curry of Peoria and Mrs. Marjorie Jenks of Spokane, Washington and three grandchildren.
