Dr. G. V. Conn's Brother Dies at Burlington, Iowa

Dr. G. V. Conn, LaHarpe veterinarian, was advised by telephone Saturday, February 21, 1948 of the rather sudden death at 12:30 p. m. that day of his brother, Charles Arthur Conn, Sr., at his home in Burlington, Iowa.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon with interment in Kossuth cemetery.

Dr. and Mrs. Conn attended the services.

A son of Marlow and Mary Conn, he was born in Hancock county near Fountain Green on July 9, 1877.  At the age of 10 he and his family went to Kossuth, Iowa where the deceased attended grade school and the Academy.

On February 8, 1905 he and Eliza Downer were married at Kossuth, and the couple lived in and near Mediapolis, Ia., until 1937 when they went to Burlington and Mr. Conn worked as a gardner.

Surviving are the widow, two sons, John F. Conn and Charles A. Conn, Jr., both of Burlington; four daughters, Mrs. Evin Aicher of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Valentine Meyer of Burlington, Mrs. Raymond McCabe of New London, and Mrs. Dean Nelson of Burlington.  Two brothers, Dr. Conn of this city and J. T. Conn of Burlington, and a sister, Mrs. Della Elkjer of Trenton, New Jersey also mourn his death.

A map of Des Moines County, Iowa.Charles Arthur Conn, Sr., son of Marlow M. Conn and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, was buried at Kossuth Cemetery, Yellow Springs Township, Des Moines County, Iowa.  According to the obituary, he died on February 21, 1948 (which did fall on a Saturday); the date of death reportedly on his tombstone is February 22, 1948.

Eliza A. Downer, also buried at Kossuth Cemetery, was born in Iowa on July 13, 1885.  She died slightly more than a year after Charles, on May 18, 1949.  She appears to have been the daughter of Elisha (or Elijah) Downer and Addie Hannan, who were married about 1884.  He was originally from Ohio and had been married previously, Addie was born in Iowa.

E. Downer (January 27, 1850 - September 12, 1936) and Addie A. Downer (April 5, 1864 - August 15, 1924) are buried in the Kossuth Cemetery next to two little ones born to Charles and Eliza: Donovan and Louise.

Charles' and Eliza's children, apparently all born in Yellow Springs Township, were:

i. Evelyn Conn, born about 1906.

ii. Donovan Conn, born November 1897, died February 22, 1908, buried at Kossuth Cemetery.
