JOSEPH S. CAMERON 1874-1967
LULA McCORD

Joe Cameron Rites Delayed To Saturday
Because of the Storm, Retired Farmer Was 92 Years of Age

The LaHarpe community lost one of its oldest citizens and for most of his 92 years a shrewd and congenial observer of the passing scene with the death at 4:00 a. m. on Wednesday, January 25, 1967 in LaHarpe hospital of Joseph S. Cameron.

Mr. Cameron, a retired farmer, had been in failing health the past few years and a resident of the Gillett home for five years.  He was hospitalized with his last illness, however, only six weeks.

Mr. Cameron, son of Matthew S. and Mary (Stewart) Cameron, was born in Airsville, Pennsylvania on July 26, 1874.  He came to the LaHarpe community at the age of 17, returning only briefly to Pennsylvania and emgrating here again in 1893.

His marriage to Lula McCord occurred at Carthage on February 2, 1898, and the couple operated several farms near LaHarpe before moving into town 45 years ago.  The wife died on December 3, 1939.

Mr. Cameron, privileged to live long beyond man's normal span, seemed equally privileged in his ability to assess and appreciate the vast and innumerable changes with marked his life.  He lived from the days of the horse and buggy to jet flights and probes of outer space, changes he accepted with a philosophical judgement difficult for most persons in the more staid and rigid periods of experience.

He is mourned by one son, Vernon Cameron, of LaHarpe, a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Mamie) Spangler of rural Carthage; six grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Andrew Douglas, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and by several nieces and nephews, including Mac Freeman of LaHarpe, who was reared in the Cameron home.

Mr. Cameron was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
