ALFRED BIERY ca. 1837 - ca. 1901
MARY E. HARTMAN 1857 - 1954-55

An image of the obituary clipped from a newspaper.
Mary E. Hartman, daughter of Henry Hartman and Jemima Brown, was born July 7, 1857, in or near Mt. Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. (Her obituary names her father as Joseph Hartman; marriage documents show Henry Hartman, as do those of her brother, Willard.)

Henry Hartman died with Mary was only 9 or 10 years old.  Soon after, Jemima Brown Hartman and children accompanied James Madison Shields, Jemima's brother-in-law, to Hancock County, Illinois. They later married.

Most of Mary's youthful years were spent in Fountain Green and Hancock Townships.  In 1880 she was boarding in the home of Charles G. and Edna Wright, in Carthage Township. With her was a 2 year old boy named as Frank Hartman; in the 1900 census he was shown as Frank Brown.

Perhaps it was during her stay in Carthage Township that Mary became acqainted with bachelor farmer Alfred Biery, who had been farming in Carthage Township for a number of years.  In late 1880, on December 16th, they were married, either in or near Carthage. Witnesses were Alfred's brothers, Henry and Reuben Biery.  Marriage documents  (89k, 79k)

Alfred was born in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, about 1837.  His father was Joseph Biery; his mother's name may have been Lucy Heisman (the handwriting on the Board of Health document is not quite clear).

Mary and Alfred had a little more than 20 years together, until his death about 1901.  She survived him by over half a century.  She died in either 1954 or '55, perhaps in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, and was buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage, Hancock County.  Of her seven children, only four survived her.

Mary's son was:

i. Frank Hartman/Brown, born about 1878 in Illinois, probably Hancock County.

Mary and Alfred's children were probably all born in or near Carthage Township, Hancock County, Illinois.  They were:

i. Alfred Earl Biery, born July 9, 1882*.  He married Edith Lyle Huston (born about 1882), daughter of Samuel Fulton Huston and Sarah V. Spangler.

ii. Joseph Henry Biery, born February 24, 1887*.  Mary apparently made her home with Joseph and his family for a number of years.

iii. Roscoe Trellis Biery, born August 30, 1889*.

iv. Reuben Ernest Biery, born November 14, 1890.  When he registered for Selective service in 1917, the date of birth recorded was November 14, 1892; he signed his name Ernest Ruben Biery.  Social Security records show him as Ernest Biery, born November 14, 1890, died April 1976, last known address: Monte Vista, Rio Grand County, Colorado.

v. Flora Eva Biery, also found as Evelyn, born about 1893.  She worked for a time as a nurse and married Henry A. Gray about 1926.  He was a surgeon and veteran of World War I.  Census listings 1900-1930

vi. Louis M. Biery, born April 23, 1896*.

* Birth date according to Selective Service registration card.  We have found numerous discrepancies between these records, the Social Security death index and other records.
