with Three Associate Lines: Hadley, Lawrence, Prescott by Helen Regan Sleeter Plummer, 1965 A million thanks to Stan Sleeter for his permission to display portions of his mother's beautifully written history. Helen Plummer credited the following persons' contributions to her work: Doris Barb Pogue, Bertha Kerr Satnam, Blanche Scott Premo, John F. Regan, and Muriel G. Swan (DAR genealogist for Vermont). Unless specifically noted, the following text is transcribed verbatim from Mrs. Plummer's original manuscript.
Jonas Hadley was the seventh child of the thirteen born to John and Eunice Hadley. He was born on May 26, 1756, in Westford, Massachusetts. On December 14, 1780, he married Azubah Prescott at Groton, Mass. She was the daughter of David and Abigail Wright Prescott of Westford, Mass., and was born July 24, 1764, in Groton, Mass. Jonas and Azubah Prescott Hadley moved several times, residing first in Westford, Mass., later in Groton, Mass., still later in Pepperell, Mass.; and finally in Mt. Holly, Vermont*. The date of Jonas' death is not recorded, but his Will was signed on December 1, 1807. In it he named his wife and children. These children, as in his father's family, numbered thirteen. According to the Will, vital records and DAR No. 65725, they were: Eunice - born June 4, 1781, in Groton, Mass. She married Richard Lawrence, who was born in 1773 and died on February 24, 1848, aged 75 years. Joel - born November 26, 1782, in Pepperell, Massachusetts. Jesse - (called "second" son) born September 13, 1784, in Groton, Mass. Sometime before 1810 he married Lucinda Lawrence. She was born April 19, 1790, in Littleton, Mass, and died January 29, 1860. He died at Fountain Green, Illinois, September 7, 1859. They are both buried near there. Azubah - born September 14, 1786, in Groton, Mass. She probably married her cousin, John Hadley, Jr., son of John and Ruth Kemp Hadley, on June 3, 1802, in Mt. Holly, Vermont. Rachel - born August 14, 1788, in Groton, Mass. She married Phineas W. Spaulding (1784-1865). Hannah - born May 8, 1791, in Mt. Holly, Vt. Married Asa Gould. Jonas, Junior - born February 21, 1793, in Mt. Holly, Vt. He married Abiah or Alice Ordway. He died in 1862, she in 1884. Zacheus - born May 4, 1796, in Mt. Holly, Vt. (Some records call him "Thatcher".) Rhoda - born February 24, 1798 Lydia - born October 23,1800, in Mt. Holly, Vt. Married Nathaniel Pingrey. Samuel - born July 18, 1803, in Mt. Holly, Vt. Married Mary Johnson. Huldah - born July 3, 1804. She married Jazar Smith. Silvia - born November 9, 1806, in Mt. Holly, Vt. Married Albert Lawrence. Jonas Hadley is the second of the three ancestors on our Grandfather John T. Larkin's side, to whom we have traced Revolutionary War service. He is the ancestor used by Blanche Premo for her DAR membership (#482242). I quote from Mrs. Swan's report: "Jonas, Jonathan and John Hadley, all brothers are listed in the alphabetical list of soldiers in the War of Revolution, serving from Westford, Massachusetts. "Jonas Hadley", Westford. Private, Capt. John Minot's Co., Col. Dike's Regt.; pay abstract for wages and travel allowance to and from Dorchester Heights; said Hadley credited with 2 days; mileage allowance (68 miles) also allowed; warrant allowed in Council Nov. 30, 1776; also Capt. Asa Lawrence's Co. of volunteers, Col. Jonathan Reed's Regt.; enlisted Sept. 26, 1777; discharged Nov. 9, 1777; service 1 mo. 15 days travel included at the Northward; Co. raised in Westford and Littleton and marched to assist the army under Gen. Gates." The will of "Jonas Hadley", referred to above, signed December 1, 1807, reads as follows:
Over the execution of this will there was apparently some confusion and some bitterness. The issue is still confusing. (For copies of various documents, see Mrs. Muriel C. Swan's report, in my files.) The gist of them is, however, this: Under date of February 3, 1808, Judge Randall, Judge of Probate, authorized Jesse Hadley to take the depositions of "Amos Reed, Abram Prescott and Samson Prescott" and certify the same to him. "It is expected that you certify that they make oath that the Testator signed and published the writing purporting to be his last will and testament as such and that he was of sound disposing mind and memory - and that they subscribed their names thereto in the presence of the Testator and at his request." On February 15, 1808, the following was recorded in the Mount Holly Town Records Book 3, pg. 411:
"I hearby certify that Amos Reed, Abram Prescott and Sampson Prescott personally appeared before me and made oath that they saw Jonas Hadley sign, seal, publish and declare the annexed instrument to be his last will and testament and that according to the best of their judgment the said Jonas Hadley was of sound disposing mind and memory and that they subscribed their names thereunto in the presence and at the request of the said Jonas Hadley and in the presence of each other.... "Sworn to before me the day and year above written. "Zeus(?) Wrights, Justice of the Peace"
On the 14th day of March, 1808, the will was probated, and letters of administration granted to Jesse Hadley, by Joseph Randall, Judge of Probate. But the date of the recording of this instrument by Stephen Tucker, Town Clerk, is December 14, 1812. Then under date of September 9th, 1811 (the five years were not up), appears an instrument in the Probate Records of Rutland, Vt., from which I quote: "Upon the written application and representation of Azubah Hadley of Mount Holly in said District one of the principal legatees of Jonas Hadley late of Mount Holly in said District deceased, representing that Jesse Hadley, executor of the last will and testament of Jonas Hadley late of Mount Holly deceased has absconded and gone to parts unknown and has not paid any of the legacies or in any manner performed or executed the last will of the said deceased and praying that some suitable person may be appointed administrator - " Was this Azubah Hadley the mother or the sister of Jesse Hadley? She apparently did not have the support of the other children, although Richard Lawrence was the husband of Eunice (see below). And "absconded and gone to parts unknown" is confusing, to say the least, since Jesse's daughter, Lucinda Adeline**, our great-grandmother, was born in Mt. Holly, according to the records, on October 9, 1811, just one month after the date of the above action. However Richard Lawrence of Mt. Holly was appointed administrator of the estate of Jonas Hadley, bonds "being first given according to law in the sum of $3000.00 Zacheus Prescott of said Mount Holly surety to make inventory at or before the 9th day of December next and settlement of or before the 9th of September AD 1812." This document is signed by William D. Smith, Register. Some question seems also to have arisen as to whether the estate would be sufficient to pay the debts. And here we are left, in this interesting situation, to flounder in our own imaginations. What Azubah Prescott Hadley, wife of Jonas, did, was to marry again. Her second husband was John Ellis, of Mt. Holly, Vt.; and after his death, she married Abraham Hadley, of Mt. Holly, Vt., whose connection to our Hadley family is not known. She died June 17, 1844, aged 80 years, in Mt. Holly, Vermont, and is buried in the Old Cemetery in Belmont Village. Her tombstone record calls her the wife of Abraham Hadley***.
The following italicized text is shared by another Hadley researcher and descendant of Jonas Hadley, Jr.: * "Jonas Sr. was a selectman in Mt. Holly, Vermont, and the first of my line to move from Massachusetts to Vermont, where a number of generations of Hadleys followed, all in that same southeastern part of the state." ** "In the handwritten Mt. Holly, VT town clerk's records originally entered by a Stephen Tucker, August 9, 1814, and copied for one of my relatives long ago (1915) by then town clerk, E.S. Burton, Franklin Lawrence and Adeline Lucinda (~ ~ listed [in the records] as "Lucinda Adeline)" are recorded as having been born in Mt. Holly. Adeline's [date of birth] is given as October 9. The other three aren't listed, as one would expect since they were born elsewhere." Although she was listed as Lucinda Adeline by the County Clerk, she went by the name of Adeline Lucinda. We do not know if the Clerk was in error or if Adeline rearranged her name to match her preference; Helen Plummer did not address this in her history. It's interesting to note that a number of other female family members, all descended from the Hadley line, followed Adeline's example. Some swapped the order of their names, others changed the spelling at will. There is evidence that the family had lost track of Jesse after he left Centreville; they thought he might have settled his family in Nebraska. *** Some research indicates that Azubah's third husband was Abraham Hawkins, not Abraham Hadley. This latter statement is supported by tombstone inscriptions discovered and shared by Jim Kendall, from one of a set of volumes published by Margaret R. Jenks.
