A second great-granddaughter of Herschel and Evaline, Anna Hadley, advises that she has a handwritten family history dictated by Evaline Remington Hadley shortly before her death in April of 1927.  That history gives June 15, 1829, as Herschel's birth date, but his sister, Marinda, was born on September 22, 1829.

Cumulative census listings and information recorded at the time of Herschel's death (his age was said to be 73), tend to indicate that he was born in 1827.

Excerpts from letters written by Abel Larkin (husband of Herschel's sister, Adeline), shared by
John Franklin Regan, Jr, great-grandson of Abel and Adeline Larkin:

May 6, 1849: "Herschel Hadley, my youngest brother-in-law, has gone to California. ~ ~ ~ ~ He went with an ox team in company with more."

Apr 14, 1851: "I left my brother-in-law in California.  His health was good and his luck average. He had spent several hundred dollars in prospecting or traveling over the mining country to find a good place."

Dec 27, 1852: "We visited father-in-law's folks last Oct.  They were all well and live comfortable. Herschel has not returned from California yet, but writes that he is doing fair business at farming.  I suppose that he is doing very well.  His luck has formerly been both good and bad."

May 11, 1857: "Heard from [Adeline's] brother in California.  He is well and I guess doing a tolerable business at farming."

June 26, 1857: "Herschel Hadley, brother in law still lives in California doing tolerable well at farming."
