Circa 1921 at the home of Charles and Mary.  The youngsters were more interested in the watermelon than in having their pictures taken.  Thus far identified: (1) Charles; (2) Mary; (3) James Elmer - son; (4) Mary E. Bailey - granddaughter; (5) Janette White Bailey - daughter.    Shared by J. Frank Shouse.

Charles Wesley White, son of Jary White & Laura Eaton, was born January 22, 1844, in Township 6 North, 5 West, Hancock County, Illinois.  Charles' parents and grandparents are counted among the earliest settlers in the area.  The 'goverment land' purchased by Jary White and his father, also named Jary White, was part of the Illinois Military Tract surveyed in 1815-1816. Much of the area was designated as bounty land, i.e., land to be awarded to veterans of the War of 1812 and, later, veterans of the Black Hawk War of 1832, during which the few remaining native Americans were forced from their historical territory.  After a land office was opened in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, in 1831, and the close of the Black Hawk War, settlers began flooding into Hancock County, many drawn by advertisements promising cheap, fertile land and sure prosperity. The area where the Whites' farms were located wouldn't be actually be named Fountain Green Township until Charles was six years old.

Described as being 5' 10" tall, with brown hair and gray eyes, Charles enlisted in the Union Army in 1862.  The following details are from the Muster and Descriptive Rolls compiled by the Illinois Adjutant General's Office.

The Adjutant General's report and Dyer's Compendium provide a record of the 64th Regiment's unit history.  See Illinois in the Civil War, on an external website.

Less than a year after returning to Illinois, Charles married Mary Freeland Robertson, only child of Andrew Robertson and Isabell Bullock.  Andrew and Isabell, both natives of Scotland, had come to Illinois from Canada by way of Missouri.  Many of Isabell's large family were already located in Hancock County.  Isabell was the sister of Andrew's deceased first wife.

Born in Lanark, Ontario, Canada, on January 1, 1845, Mary had two surviving half-brothers, two-half sisters and many, many cousins.

Charles and Mary became man and wife on April 17, 1866, about three weeks after Mary's father passed away.  Shortly thereafter they moved to Missouri, began farming and soon welcomed the first of eleven children that would be born to them.

An outline map of Missouri counties, illustrating the locations of Sullivan and Linn Counties and the approximate location of Browning. In 1870 the White household included Mary's widowed mother; Mary's widowed half-brother, Thomas, and his three children; Mary's teenage cousin, Jennette King.  These were in addition to Charles' and Mary's little girls, Laura and Clara.  They had lost an infant son in 1869, and little Clara wouldn't see her fifth birthday.  They were living in Pleasant Hill Township, Sullivan County, Missouri, where they would remain until sometime after June 1, 1900.  By that date, Charles and Mary had buried four of their children.

Around 1883 (the date is hard to read) Charles filed for and received a veteran's pension.

By the time of the 1910 Federal Census, Charles had retired.  He had moved his family to the town of Browning in Linn County, Missouri.  He and Mary spent the rest of their lives in Browning.  The map, upper right, illustrates the locations of Sullivan and Linn Counties.  The small inset illustrates the approximate location of Browning, which today lies just south of the county line.  From Towns of Sullivan County, on the Sullivan County, Missouri, website, as of 1895 Browning had a population of about 800 and spanned the county line.

Mary died December 2, 1921.  Charles subsequently married Mrs. Nancy Funnell, the former Nancy E. King.  In 1870 Charles and Mary had been near neighbors of the King family.

Charles died May 26, 1930; Nancy survived him.  That fall Nancy applied for a widow's pension based on Charles' Army service; there is no certificate number indicating that it was granted.

Charles and Mary were buried at Enterprise Cemetery, rural Browning, as were several of their children.

Nancy died January 22, 1940, in Browning, and was buried next to her first husband, Meade B. Mills, at White Oak Cemetery, Sullivan County.
