MANSEL LAWRENCE WHITE 1855-1940
MARY ANN C GEORGE 1855-1931

Mary Ann C George was born in Virginia in 1855.  She was the daughter of Henry George and Martha Jane Balsley.  A number of web authors have named her as Mary Katherine George.  The C found in two census records could have been for Catharine, but from cradle to grave we have not yet seen any record in which that name was mentioned.

Mansel Lawrence White, son of Thomas B. White and Mary Austin was born December 22, 1855, in McDonough County, Illinois.  Of six children born to Thomas and Mary, only two, Mansel and Freeman, survived infancy.  The boys lost their father in 1863 (a Civil War casualty) and their mother in 1875.

Mansel was not yet 21 when he and Mary George wanted to get married late in 1874.  Mansel's mother (who had remarried six years after Thomas died) signed a note giving her permission and Augustus White, Mansel's first cousin, signed an affidavit declaring that Mary George was over the age of 18.  Why did Augustus sign this document rather than Mary's father?  Good question.

Rev. Thomas M. Walker performed the nuptials on November 5, 1874, at Fountain Green.  Marriage Documents

Mansel and Mary raised their children and farmed in Fountain Green Township for at least a quarter century.  They moved to Blandinsville, McDonough County, sometime between 1900 and 1910, and spent the rest of their lives there.

Mary died May 20, 1931, Mansel died January 5, 1940.  Their remains were placed in the mausoleum at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville.

The White children were:

i. Leroy Thomas White, born March 26, 1876, died October 31, 1960, at LaHarpe, Hancock County.  Burial at LaHarpe Township Cemetery.

ii. Mattie Pearl (also found as Pearl M.) White, born in 1878.  She died in 1969.  Mattie and her husband, Samuel H. Mann (1871-1955) are both buried at Central Cemetery, Hire Township, McDonough County.

iii. Vern H. White, born October 21, 1892, died November 1, 1892, also buried at Central Cemetery.
