 EDWARD T. SQUIRES 1829-1890
SARAH EMILY THOMAS 1833-1893

Edward T. Squires, reportedly the son of Charles M. Squires and Charlotte Smith, was born about August 26 or 27, 1829, in Newbury Township, Geauga County, Ohio.  The location of his birth is suggested by the family's location in 1830.  The family was still in Newbury Township, Geauga County, in 1840.

By 1850 Edward and several of his siblings were counted in Hancock County, Illinois.  Based on their near neighbors, they were located in the area which would shortly be named Fountain Green Township.

Edward married Sarah Emily Thomas about August 16, 1857, in Henderson County, Illinois.

Also found as Sally and Emma, Emily was born at "Mt. Pleasant, Windsor, Canada," according to funeral home records, on December 14, 1833.  However, both Mt. Pleasant and Windsor are cities located in Ontario Province and are not particularly close to each other.  We believe (1) that Sarah was the daughter of Jacob Thomas, a native of New York, (2) her mother's given name may have been Chloe, and (3) she was the sister (or half sister) of Elizabeth Thomas (ca. 1837-1911).

In 1865, with three small children at home and another on the way, Edward joined the Union Army. From the Muster and Descriptive Rolls compiled by the Illinois Adjutant General's Office:

An image of Edward's pension application card.Edward returned to Hancock County, where he and Emily farmed, raised their children and spent the rest of their lives.

In May of 1884 Edward applied for a veteran's pension, but it was not granted.  He died March 5, 1890.  The following January Emily applied for a widow's pension; it was also not granted.  She died February 26, 1893, of consumption.  They are buried at LaHarpe City Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock County.

The Squires children were probably all born in Fountain Green Township.  They were:

i. John Squires, born about 1858.  Listed on the 1860 Mortality Schedule for Fountain Green Township was John Squires, 1, who died in June of 1859 after an accident.  Connecting little John to this family is speculation.  Burial location undetermined.

ii. Rossetta E. Squires, born February 17, 1860.  She married George S. Roller about March 6, 1884.  They lived in LaHarpe for a number of years.  Rossetta died in LaHarpe on February 23, 1935, burial at LaHarpe Township Cemetery.

iii. Laura E. Squires, also found as Lauretta, born about 1860.  She married John A. Edmunds about February 26, 1889.  They initially farmed in LaHarpe Township, later moved to Henderson County, where Laura died on August 31, 1937.  We expect to find her buried at the Terre Haute Cemetery, Henderson County.

iv. William Theodore Squires, died July 4, 1927, at Blandinsville, McDonough County, burial at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville.  The year of birth on his tombstone is 1864, but most resources suggest 1862.  A quoted date, November 7, 1864, may conflict with the date of birth of Thomas Trubedore Squires.

v. Thomas Trubedore Squires, known as Trube, also found as Trubedore Thomas Squires, was born in Fountain Green Township, died in LaHarpe, burial at LaHarpe Township Cemetery. He married Eola Wright about January 18, 1898.  They farmed in Fountain Green Township for many years.

From a compilation of funeral home records, he was born June 17, 1865, died May 6, 1954. If this date of birth is accurate and if the date for Theodore's birth, above, is accurate, Trube was born not quite 7 1/2 months after Theodore.

From a reading of his tombstone, "T. J. Squires" died May 6, 1957 (rather than 1954), at the age of 88.  This supports a birth year of 1865.
