Pioneer Justices In Fountain Green
By G. C. Tyler.
from The News of Fountain Green, January 5, 1927

In a justice of the peace record book of Fountain Green township, in my possession kept by J. M. Renshaw, the first justice of the peace elected in 1850 after township organization.

We find the following documents signed by Abraham Lincoln and Hezekiah Lincoln, cousins of the president, who were living that time in the Lincoln home near LaCrosse, Ill., in a new frame house, the first frame house in Fountain Green township.

Their signature is written in the document as witness in a suit brought by A. Saylors versus S. C. Hamilton for the payment of a note for the sum of one hundred sixty dollars past due,  The jury rendered verdict infavor of plaintiff.

Also in suit brought by F. A. Albright versus James E. Smith for blacksmith work done to the amount of $16.85.  We find the names of some of the earliest settlers and active men in public affairs, were sumoned as witness or juror.  The names were, Walter Alton, David Ostrander, Eliot C. Alton, John Gauff, John Nelson, Col. T. M. Geddes, K. N. Leach, John Mesick, Steven H. Tyler, Jr., James E. McConnell, A. J. Mull, Alex W. McConnell, Thomas Miller, Sr., Jabez Beebe, and James Curry.  This trial was held on Sept. 16, 1850, verdict in favor of plaintiff.

All the above named pioneers are deceased and there are today their representatives living in Fountain Green township by the same names, quite a number of the third and some of the fourth generation.

Very truly,     George C. Tyler.
