From the 1921 Scofield History of Hancock County, page 1208

GEORGE, Henry, now deceased, was for many years one of the highly esteemed men and successful farmers of Fountain Green Township, this county.  He was born in Hesse Cassel, Germany, June 24, 1825, a son of Henry and Elizabeth (Schaffer) George, also natives of Germany, who came to the United States in 1848, and located in Virginia, where they lived until after the close of the Civil War, when they journeyed west to Illinois.  After a stay in McDonough County, of one year they came to Hancock County and located in Fountain Green Township.

Henry George was married in Shenandoah, Va., February 28, 1854, to Martha Jane Balsley, who was born near Staunton, Va., June 22, 1831, and they became the parents of the following children: Mary, who is Mrs. Mansel L. White, of Blandinsville; Ella, who is Mrs. Noble White, of Kirksville, Mo.; Emma B., who is Mrs. Frank Mackelherne, of Chicago; and Lewis F., who is a farmer of Fountain Green Township.  Henry George lived on his farm in Fountain Green Township until his death, which occurred March 14, 1899, his widow surviving him until February 26, 1904.  They were both most excellent and worthy people and their descendants are proving that they belong to the same fine stock as their parents.

See: Henry and Elizabeth George.  Contrary to the above statement regarding when they came to Illinois, Henry and Elizabeth were counted in Hire Township, McDonough County, in the 1860 Federal Census.  The intended meaning was probably that Henry and Martha, not Henry's father and mother, stayed in Virginia until after the close of the Civil War.  The obituary of Lewis F. George, Henry and Martha's son, said the family arrived in 1868.

Martha J. Balsley was the daughter of Jonathan Balsley.  In 1850 the Balsley family was counted in the Federal Census in Virginia, District 2 1/2, in proximity to Henry's parents.

Henry and Martha were in Augusta County, Virginia, in 1860, with two young daughters and one of Martha's sisters.

Henry and Martha were buried in Central Cemetery, Hire Township, McDonough County, Illinois.

Their children:

i. Mary Ann C George, born in Virginia in 1855.  She died May 20, 1931, at Blandinsville, McDonough County, Illinois, and was entombed at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville.

ii. Ella N. George, also found as Elenore and Elnora, born May 25, 1859, in Virginia.  She died November 11, 1944, and was buried at Highland Park Cemetery, Section C45, Kirksville, MO.

iii. Emma B. George, born about 1866 in Virginia.

iv. Lewis F. George, born April 19, 1868, in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois.  He died in 1951 in Blandinsville, and was buried at Central Cemetery, Hire Township.
