| FOUNTAIN GREEN FAMILIES NEWS MEMORABILIA |
Mary Fiscus, daughter of Mary became the wife of Mark Frary and at least two of their children were born in Ohio. The year 1860 found Mark and Mary, three children, and Mary's parents in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois. Mark and Mary were listed in the census immediately following Lloyd and Millicent Robinson, so they were probably living in or very near the village of Webster. It would have been a convenient location for Mark to have plied his trade. He was a cooper, which would have included the manufacture and repair of wooden barrels and tubs. It appears that Mary was also counted in her father's home. In that same year their middle child, Eugene, was shown at the age of 2, born in Ohio. (Please ignore the little detail of him being named as Imogene, a female. Every census found thus far has consistently shown Eugene's age progression from this starting point.) The next child, Alice, was a year younger and had been born in Ohio, so we can estimate that the Frarys had arrived in Illinois in the late 1850s. In 1861 Mark enlisted in the Union Army. From the Muster and Descriptive Rolls compiled by the Illinois Adjutant General's Office: Name FRARY, MARK
Personal Characteristics
Service Record
After the war Mark took his family to Iowa. In both 1870 and 1880 he was listed as a bridge builder in Cass County. In 1885 he applied for a veteran's pension, which was granted. By 1900 he and Mary had parted company. She, with a granddaughter named Goldy, were living with Mary's widowed father in Fountain Green Township. Mary reported in both 1900 and 1910 that she was the mother of four children, only one of whom was living. Mark, if this was the correct Mark Frary - the details are off, was in the county jail in Augusta, Maine. William Fiscus died in 1906. Mary and Eugene may have stayed on the family farm for a few years; they were in Fountain Green Township in 1910. In 1920 they were residing in the town of LaHarpe. Mary died April 6, 1922, and was buried at LaHarpe Township Cemetery. Three of the Frary children:
