Fountain Green.

Our little village is again wrapped in a veil of sadness by the passing away of Mrs. John Tyler. Amanda Williams was born, February 23, 1845, at the home of her parents, Lemuel and Cassie Williams in McDonough county.  She was united in marriage to John H. Tyler, March 15, 1864 and has since resided in Fountain Green.

¶ To this union was born eight children, viz.: Mrs. S. D. Weiser, of Carthage, Ill.; Mrs. John White, of Macon, Mo.; Mrs. George Miller, Mrs. Clarence Irvin, Stephen H. and Chester D., all of this place, Mary and Lemuel having died in infancy.

¶ Deceased united with the church before her marriage and has lived a consisent christian believing and trusting in Him who doeth all things well.

¶ Three years ago this sumer it was discovered that she was afflicted with a cancer in the left side. She immediately went to Macomb to the hospital and had it removed.  It was hoped by her family and friends that she had fully recovered, but last October the dreadful disease again took hold and the efforts of physicians to save her were of no avail and after long weeks of suffering she quietly passed away, Saturday, August 11, 1906, aged 61 years, 5 months and 18 days.

Mrs. Tyler was highly esteemed by old and young for her christian character, her generous nature and love for her family and friends.  While friends may think on this departure with sorrowful regret, it is in her home, where grief is the deepest and the vacant chair can never be filled.  She was always patient and through all the weeks of sickness was never heard to murmur or complain.  Loving hands were ever ready to minister to her wants and for her comfort.  Her children were all present during her last hours and while their hearts are shattered with grief, they have this comforting thought that mother is in heaven, where trials and sufferings are never known.

¶ Besides husband and children, she leaves ten grandchildren, one brother, three sisters and a hosts of other relatives and friends to mourn her departure.

¶ The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church, Monday, at two o'clock p. m. Rev. Love officiating, after which she was laid to rest beside her two children in the cemetery north of town. The family have the deepest sympathy of the entire country.

¶ The following from a distance attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Williams*, Mr. and Mrs. Switzer, Mrs. Grimes and Mrs. Thomas Callihan, all of Tennessee, Mr. and Mrs. Nez Ruggles, of Vishnue, Lit Williams, of Colmar, and Miss Mary Tyler of Carthage.

From the files of the LaHarpe Historical and Genealogical Society.  The original was written as one long paragraph; verbatim transcription other than paragraph breaks added for ease of reading, indicated by ¶.

* Probably Anderson Duncan Williams (Amanda's brother) and his wife, the former Louisa Bryant.

John Henry Tyler was born April 22, 1844, in Iowa, the son of Alvin Tyler and Adeline Church, both originally from Connecticut.  Alvin Tyler died in 1846.  Adeline left their home in Marietta, Ohio, and took her two sons, Charles and John, back to Connecticut.  By 1860 Charles had established himself in Fountain Green Township and John was living with him.

Hancock County marriage license #1576 was issued to John H. Tyler and Miss Amanda Williams on March 12,1864.  They were married on the 15th by the Reverend Thomas M. Walker.  We can reasonably presume they were married in Fountain Green Township.  Married on the same day by Rev. Walker were Seth T. Williams, Amanda's brother, and Caroline Weller.

John was a carpenter.  He is said to have been the builder of the fine Victorian house first owned by his brother.  Later the home belonged to John's son-in-law and daughter, George and Kate Miller. View an image of this home.  Return to this page with your browser button.
