Jared Prentis is counted as one of the early settlers in Fountain Green Township, said to have first arrived in 1833, when that area was known as Township 6 North, 5 West.  He was born in or near Butternuts, Otsego County, New York, the sixth of nine children born to Jared Prentis and Mary Douglas.  There is some indication that one brother, Samuel, may have also lived for a time in the township, before moving further west.  Two of Jared's first cousins were also among the earliest arrivals, Lyman and Daniel Prentis.  See Early Settlers of Fountain Green Twp. from The News of Fountain Green, November 18, 1925.

Jared Prentis and Emeline Clark were married in Sangamon County, Illinois, on November 30, 1836.  He lost her less than a year later and never remarried.  Jared was described as a wealthy "eccentric New Englishman", "upright, reliable ~ in every respect", "held in high esteem by the Pioneer settlers".  See Pioneer Lender, from The News of Fountain Green, November 4, 1925.

On October 10, 1840, the government land office at Quincy processed patents for 6 parcels of land purchased by Jared Prentiss.  The total acreage was 520 acres, all located in Fountain Green Township.  View an illustration of the locations of those purchases.

Read a letter written in 1857 by Daniel Prentis, in which he recounted Jared's death.
