FOUNTAIN GREEN CEMETERY HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS |
WIFE OF S. A. KNOTT DIED Jan. 22, 1864 AGED 52 Ys. 10 Ms. 20 Ds. |
Author - Marcia Farina |
Samuel A. Knott and Miss "Anne Currey" were married on January 22, 1857, by Rev. Thomas M. Walker, a prolific minister in the Fountain Green area of Hancock County, Illinois. Marriage License
Samuel, born about 1803 in Pennsylvania, was a widower with two surviving sons. He lost his wife and three daughters within less than a two year time span in 1853 and 1854. We believe that Samuel's second wife was the daughter of Matthew Curry, a native of Ireland, and his wife, the former Catherine Fleming. While errors in censuses are certainly not uncommon, due caution is necessary because of the disparity between the ages reported for Ann Curry in 1850 and Ann Knott in 1860. Of the extended Curry family in Hancock County, the spelling "Currey" was used only by James Currey, a son of Matthew and Catherine. Prior to 1850 the Currys had been in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Catherine had died sometime before 1850, so the responsibility of running her father's household had probably fallen to Ann, the last Curry child remaining at home. Samuel and Ann were living in Tennessee Township in 1860, along with Samuel's younger son, Joel. Samuel's elder son, Isaiah, was listed in the previous household. Ann died on January 22, 1864. Buried at Fountain Green Cemetery, her marker is today leaning against the marker for her father and brother. |
