| Samuel Glass and Rachel Marshall married in 1833 at the Path Valley Presbyterian Church in Fannettsburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She is believed to have been the daughter of Robert Marshall and Elizabeth Fitzsimmons. Between 1835 and 1838, with two sons barely more than toddlers, Samuel and Rachel made their way to Illinois.
In the 1840 Federal Census they were counted among families known to have lived in Township 6 North, 5 West, later named Fountain Green Township. If they came directly to Hancock County from Pennsylvania, we can reasonably presume that all children after the oldest two boys were born in that same township. When the Presbyterian Church at Fountain Green was first organized in 1840, Samuel and Rachel became members of the congregation. The early 1860s were years of loss. Samuel and Rachel buried a son in 1860, sent two sons off to serve in the Union Army and grieved the death of one in 1863, lost a granddaughter in 1862 and another in 1863, and a daughter-in-law in 1864. Compiled by Suzanne Miller November 23, 1873 - LaCrosse The burning of Samuel Glass' house was noted in "The Republican" last week. The family was home in bed. The fire was discovered about 2 o'clock in the morning and was under such headway that they only succeeded in saving a small remnant of bed clothing. In 3 days Mr. Glass with the assistance of neighbors, had timber on the ground and logs at Leach's mill for another building. Mr. Leach did the sawing without charge. Before the close of this week the house, 16 x 26, 2 stories will be ready for the plasterers. Mr. Glass has much valuable assistance from his neighbors and from the merchants of La Harpe, LaCrosse and Ft. Green. |
