SAMUEL CONN
DIED
May 17, 1887.
AGED
78 ys. 10 ms. 8 ds.
His memory is blessed

Samuel Conn was born July 9, 1808* in New York.  His wife, maiden name undetermined, was born April 21, 1809*, also in New York.  The given name Maria was inscribed for her on the north face of their shared tombstone at Fountain Green Cemetery, but the name found most often in other records is Mariah.  She is also found as Marie.

They were among the early farmer-settlers in what became known as the Majorville neighborhood many years later.  See: the Majorville souvenir booklet compiled circa 1935.

Mariah died June 21, 1880; Samuel followed her in death May 17, 1887.  They are buried alongside their daughter, Rosina.  Her tombstone, embedded in the ground, is visible in two of the above pictures.

The obituary of their daughter, Ermina, reported that Samuel and Mariah were the parents of five girls and three boys. We can account for five of those children.  Those born in Illinois were probably all born in the area later named Hancock Township, at the Conn home located 3/4 mile east of present day Majorville Cemetery.

The known Conn children were:

i. Ermina Conn, born December 14, 1834, in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, according to her obituary.  (A biography of her second husband stated she was born in Cattaraugus County, New York; this appears to have been incorrect.)  Ermina was married first to John Windsor S White on March 22, 1865, in Hancock County, Illinois.  He died in 1873.  She married second Dr. L. J. Rhea on May 17, 1876.  Ermina died March 10, 1914, at her home in Fountain Green. Burial location undetermined.

ii. Rosina Conn, born February 3, 1838*, in New York.  She died May 5, 1857, probably in Hancock Township.  Interment at Fountain Green Cemetery.

iii. Caroline "Carrie" Conn, born August 3, 1843.  She died August 28, 1911, at Blandinsville, McDonough County, Illinois, and was buried at Glade City Cemetery in Blandinsville.

iv. Marlow M. Conn, born October 11, 1845.  He died April 7, 1922, probably in Mediapolis, Des Moines County, Iowa, and was buried at Kossuth Cemetery, located in Yellow Springs Township, Des Moines County.

v. Lorenzo Conn, born October 23, 1847.  He died November 12, 1909, at Blandinsville, McDonough County, Illinois. Burial at Majorville Cemetery, Hancock Township.

Counted in the Conn home in 1870 was a "Maggie Conn", 17.  Without the 1860 census listing we may never be able to substantiate this one way or the other, but we strongly suspect that this "Maggie Conn" was actually Margaret R. Dye (soon to be Lorenzo's wife) who was left fatherless and bereft of her mother's presence at an early age and under tragic circumstances.

We have evidence of a marriage and/or a burial location for each of the identifiable Conn children, including Rosina who died young and unmarried.  "Maggie Conn", found only in the 1870 census, is an unanswered question.  For more of the story, follow the link to Lorenzo.
