| Thanks to Loretta Maxwell and Linda Griess, great-granddaughters of Joseph Gilbert Jones and his first wife, Julia Etta Mort, for their contributions and assistance with this family. The picture of Gilbert is a portion of a larger portrait of Gilbert and Julia. The snapshot of Gilbert and Florence was taken in Fountain Green. |
![]() Joseph Gilbert Jones was born May 30, 1867, in Iowa, probably in Urbana Township, Monroe County. He was the 9th of the 10 children of Charles Leonard Jones, born in Kentucky, and Martha Ann Bullington, born in Illinois. Some references state that Martha was born in McDonough County, Illinois. Early in their marriage, Charles and Martha were in Appanoose County, Iowa, later moving to Monroe County. ![]() Gilbert was first married to Julia died March 5, 1897, and was buried at Eslinger Cemetery, Urbana Township, Monroe County. Follow the link to Julia for more information on Gilbert and Julia's family. It appears that Gilbert moved from Iowa to Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, shortly after Julia's death.
On June 12, 1898, Gilbert and Florence were married at the home of her father, probably in Fountain Green Township. Charles W. Tyler, J.P., performed the ceremony. Gilbert and Florence lived in Fountain Green Township through the time of the 1910 Federal Census, but by the time of their last child's birth, about 1919, they were living in Iowa. In 1920 they were living in Wall Lake, Sac County, Iowa, where Gilbert owned and operated a boarding house. They later moved to Council Grove, Morris County, Kansas. Living next door to them were son-in-law and daughter, Irwin L. and Reva F. Galloway, and their children. Florence died October 13, 1956; Gilbert died June 30, 1957. They were laid to rest in Friendship Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois.
