MAUD M. HICKS
BORN JULY. 10, 1877
DIED SEPT. 1, 1903

Dearest loved one we have laid thee
In the peaceful grave's embrace
But thy memory will be cherished
Till we see they heavenly face.

Maud was born in Linn County, Missouri, to Harriet McInturff and Robert Rush.

Harriet McInturff Rush, shown as a widow in the Federal Census of 1880, reportedly came to McDonough County in the hope of strengthening her health in the waters of Vishnu.  She subsequently married Darius Hicks, the developer of Vishnu Springs.

After Harriet's death in early 1896, Darius married Maud in the fall of the following year, on September 29, 1897, causing many a raised eyebrow.  Marriage Documents

Maud died in childbirth in 1903.  Her death set the stage for the final chapter in Darius' life.

Darius and Maud's children were:

i. Reon Darius Hicks, born in McDonough County November 16, 1898, died November 1, 1974.  Buried at Friendship Cemetery.

ii. Eulalia Hicks, born about 1901.

iii. Infant Hicks, September 1, 1903, probably placed in the coffin with Maud.
