Mabel Frances George, daughter of William Phillip and Anna Mary George, was born Dec. 10, 1885, in Hancock county, near Joetta; moved with her parents to the home where they now live some ten or eleven years ago, where she died Feb. 9, at 10 p. m. at the age of 24 years and two months. She attended the Gem City Business college at Quincy all winter, but had not been well for sometime, but owing to her strong will power and desire for knowledge would not give up her work until advised by a physician of Quincy to return to her home. She took his advice and by the time she arrived home was so ill that medical aid was at once called and her case pronounced typhoid fever. She struggled 11 days and night, with a high fever; which broke the 12th day and it was then our hopes for her recovery were strengthened. It was only two days later that heart failure called her to the home beyond. Mabel professed faith in Christ in early life and united with the Methodist church at Friendship in 1900. She was an earnest follower of Christ and active in church work. She was a regular attendant and helper in the Sunday school work. Mabel was devoted to her mother and father, brothers and sister in her home. She was industrious, ready and willing with mind and heart and hand for every turn. She leaves a host of friends and a character beyond reproach. Her chair in the family home will be vacant but she has gone ahead to prepare a home for the rest of the family. Oh! how sweet to know she fell asleep in Jesus. She did not realize death was so near and did not make any of her desires known. Her death has brought sorrow to many homes, but her life's example is left as a guide of each of us. She leaves to mourn her, a mother, father, four brothers: Joseph, Clifford, Clyde and William, at home, one sister, Mrs. Joseph Normandin, living near, besides many other relatives and friends.
Mabel's obituary stated she was born in 1885, and 1885 was the year shown in the 1900 Federal Census. True, neither of those references are highly reliable, but birth years and months for family members in that census agree with other sources, with the exceptions of Mabel and Clifton, and there's also a conflict regarding Clifton's date of birth. |
