Epitaph

Excerpted from a biography of their son, Henry, who married Martha J. Balsley:

From the 1921 Scofield History of Hancock County, Illinois, page 1208

GEORGE, Henry, now deceased, was for many years one of the highly esteemed men and successful farmers of Fountain Green Township, this county.  He was born in Hesse Cassel, Germany, June 24, 1825, a son of Henry and Elizabeth (Schaffer) George, also natives of Germany, who came to the United States in 1848, and located in Virginia, where they lived until after the close of the Civil War, when they journeyed west to Illinois.  After a stay in McDonough County, of one year they came to to Hancock County and located in Fountain Green Township.

Henry and Elizabeth were counted in Hire Township, McDonough County, Illinois, in the 1860 Federal Census.  The statement regarding when they came to Illinois was probably intended to mean that Henry and Martha Balsley George, not Henry and Elizabeth, stayed in Virginia until after the close of the Civil War.

Excerpted from a biography of their son, Jacob:

History of McDonough County, Illinois, 1885
Hire Township

Jacob George is a native of Hesse-Cassel, Germany; was born September 30, 1829, and is a son of Henry and Elizabeth (Shafer) George.  The family removed to America and settled in Virginia.

Excerpted from a biography of their son, Philip:

History of McDonough County, Illinois, 1885
Blandinsville Township

His parents, Henry and Dora E. (Schaffer) George, came to America in 1848, bringing with them their family of seven children--Henry, John G., Jacob, Catharine, wife of John Ulrich, of Hancock county, Illinois, Philip W., Elizabeth, wife of Henry Smith, of Hancock county, and Andrew.

Excerpted from a biography of their son-in-law, John Henry Smith:

From the 1921 Scofield History of Hancock County, Illinois, page 1370

After his arrival in this country, John H. Smith located in Virginia, where he met and was married to Elizabeth George, a daughter of Henry George of Virginia, who came to the West in an early day, [John H. Smith] settling first in McDonough County, but in 1864 [John H. Smith] moving to Fountain Green Township, Hancock County.  John H. Smith accompanied his father-in-law on the trip West.....

Using the inscriptions on their tombstones, Henry was born July 25, 1793, and Elizabeth was born February 8, 1802.  To recap the variations of Elizabeth's name:
- Eliza D. on her tombstone.
- Dora E. Schaffer in the 1885 biography of her son, Philip.
- Elizabeth Shafer in the 1885 biography of her son, Jacob.
- Dora Shaffer in a news item reporting Philip's death in 1907.
- Elizabeth Schafer in a 1907 biography of her son, Jacob.
- Elizabeth Schaffer in the 1921 biography of her son, Henry.
- Elizabeth in the 1921 biography of her son-in-law, John H. Smith.

The children of Henry and Elizabeth:

i. Henry George, born June 24, 1825, in Germany.  He died March 14, 1899, probably in Hancock County, Illinois, and was buried at Central Cemetery, Hire Township, McDonough County, Illinois.

ii. John G. George, born May 26, 1827 (calculated from tombstone inscription), in Germany, died January 23, 1865, burial at Friendship Cemetery.

iii. Jacob George, born September 30, 1829, in Germany, died January 21, 1909, probably in Hire Township, McDonough County, burial at Friendship Cemetery.

iv. Catharine George, born November 6, 1831, in Germany.  She died March 8, 1903, probably in Hancock Township, Hancock County.  She was buried at Majorville Cemetery, Hancock Township.

v. Philip W. George, born February 23, 1835, in Germany.  He died in August of 1907, burial at LaHarpe Township Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock County.

vi. Anna Elizabeth George, born about 1839 in Germany, died August 21, 1917, according to the 1921 biography of her husband, burial location undetermined.

vii. Andrew George, born about 1841 in Germany.

This family was counted in proximity to the household of Jonathan and Nancy Balsley, parents of Martha Balsley, who became the wife of Henry George (the son) in 1854.  Perhaps coincidentally, the surname of the family in dwelling #1287 was Koiner.  Son Jacob was already in Ohio in 1850, enumerated in the household of David Coiner.  The obvious problem with this listing is the given name recorded for the wife.

1850 Virginia Census, Augusta County, District 2 1/2, page 411A
enumerated September 26, 1850, dwelling #1286

Henry George, 57, male, farmer, born Germany
Catharine, 50, female, born Germany

Andrew, 12, male, born Germany

1860 Illinois Census, McDonough County, Hire Township, page 651
enumerated June 28, 1860, dwelling #2107
(immediately following the household of son Jacob George)

or write
