Of the six children born to John Dixon and Narrotha S. Hackworth, Joseph H. Dixon was the youngest of the four who survived to adulthood, the first of those four to die.

He was born October 3, 1847 (calculated from his tombstone inscription), in Greenup County, Kentucky, and, according to a family history, rode on horseback with his mother when the family left Kentucky and settled in McDonough County, Illinois.

He spent most, if not all, of his adult life in the family home and farming in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, never married.

He died April 17, 1893, and was buried at Friendship Cemetery.
