John Foster Creasey was born about 1843 in Lauderdale County, Alabama.  He was the son of Bird Smith Creasey and Nancy George Wilkes.  The family left Alabama, spent a few years in Greenup County, Kentucky, then made a push west to McDonough County, Illinois.

John was recruited into the Union Army on February 13, 1865, and was listed with Company I, 124th Illinois Infantry.  He was mustered out on August 15, 1865, at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois. We've found no other details, but his death 10 days later suggests that his health was the reason for the early release.  He was buried at Friendship Cemetery, near his family's home in McDonough County, Illinois.
