HENRY C. BERGES
1832-1912

MARY
1842-1913

Henry C. Berges was born in Germany in 1832.  Census records from 1900 and 1910 indicate he immigrated to the United States in the late 1850s.  Efforts to pin down his whereabouts in 1860 have been unsuccessful.

About September 10, 1861, Henry married Mary George in Adams County, Illinois.

Mary, daughter of John and Catherine Kube George, was born in Virginia in 1842.  In the late 1840s her family moved to Ross County, Ohio, and about 1855 they made their last move west and settled in Hire Township, McDonough County, Illinois.

Henry and Mary also established their home in Hire Township and remained there for the rest of their lives.  Their children were probably all born at home, hence the following presumed birthplaces:

i. Emma Berges, born about 1866 in Hire Township.

ii. William Henry Berges, born in 1870 in Hire Township.  He died in 1952 and was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery, Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois.

iii. Ann Berges, born about 1873 in Hire Township.

iv. Carrie C. Berges, born in 1875 in Hire Township.  She died in 1893, interment at Friendship Cemetery.

v. John Theadore Berges, born in Hire Township on March 24, 1877 (according to his 1917 Selective Service registration), or March 24, 1878 (according to Idaho State death records.) He died May 5, 1945, in Gooding County, Idaho.

vi. Bertha Blanch Berges, born October 4, 1880, in Hire Township.  She died September 14, 1956, and was buried at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville, McDonough County.

vii. Jacob Charles Berges, born January 20, 1886, in Hire Township.  He died February 1, 1940, in Montebello Township, Hancock County.

viii. There is evidence of an eighth Berges child.  In 1900 Mary reported she was the mother of 6 children, all living, but we know that is incorrect because Carrie had died in 1893.  In 1910 Mary reported eight children, six living.  From the information presently available, only Henry, Mary and Carrie are buried at Friendship Cemetery.
