![]() All of the Bartlett children were born in Ohio. In both 1850 and 1860 the family was in Cardington Township, Morrow County, in the heart of Ohio. Leaving behind the grave of one child and after the birth of their youngest son, about 1863, Joel and Mary brought their family to Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois. Their marriage was cut short by Joel's death in January of 1864. One can only imagine the initial devastation and what it took for Mary and the children to get through the next several years, but they succeeded. In the 1870 Federal Census the Bartlett farm was valued at $6000 and Mary and seven children were under the same roof. The eldest son, Abner, married in 1872 and in 1880 was living about 150 miles west in Appanoose County, Iowa, with his second wife and two sons. None of the other children married until after Mary died in 1886. Mary's maiden name is also found as Nickols. Other than Abner, for each child who married there should be marriage documents indicating, with luck, the county of their births and agreeing on the spelling of their mother's maiden name. When son Eugene married in 1887, he spelled her name Nichols.
