Eugene Bartlett passed away at his home on Wednesday morning after an extended illness. Funeral services were held at Friendship.  Interment at that cemetery, Rev. Mr. Sprecklemeyer of Colchester, officiating, with the Hulson quartet from the same place.  Mr. Bartlett was well known and highly respected citizen, having lived in this vicinity on his farm the greater part of his life.  His funeral was one of the largest held at Friendship.  Floral offerings were many and very lovely, mute evidence of the respect held for this good man. Much sympathy is held for the family.

Joel R. Bartlett and Mary E. Nichols brought their family to Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois, around 1863, and then tragedy struck - Joel Bartlett died.  Mary and the children had to soldier on and Eugene, the next to youngest, probably had a chore list that grew longer as he grew taller.  It's likely that Eugene B. Bartlett was born in Cardington Township, Morrow County, Ohio, where his family had resided for some years.  Unaccountably, when Eugene married his birthplace was recorded as Warren County, Illinois.

Caroline Mourning, the daughter of John Wesley Mourning and Mary Catherine Hire, was born in McDonough County.  The year of birth inscribed on her tombstone is 1869.  In the extensive Mourning family history, Roger Mourning.  His Book., author Kenneth Mourning Waddell reported that she was born August 3, 1868.  Available census records are split evenly; marriage documents support a birth year of 1868.

Caroline and Eugene were married at Macomb, McDonough County, on September 13, 1887.  Marriage Documents

Their first child, Clarence, was born the following year in Burlington, Iowa.  The second, John, was born in 1890 in Tennessee Township, as was Herbert, in 1897.

From 1900 through 1930 Eugene and Carrie were counted in the censuses in Tennessee Township. Eugene died there on April 19, 1933.  Carrie died on June 22, 1945, in Bowen, Hancock County, Illinois.  They were both buried at Friendship Cemetery.

The 1900 census listing for Carrie suggests that she had lost a child prior to June 1, 1900, while the 1910 census reported she was the mother of 9 children, all of whom were living.
