| HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS FAMILIES NEWS MEMORABILIA |
![]() Last rites were held at the Banks funeral home here yesterday afternoon at 1:00 for Logan G. Dunham, retired decorator and life-long LaHarpe citizen. Rev. A. G. Vail was in charge of the service, and interment was made in LaHarpe cemetery. Logan G. Dunham, son of George and Sarah (Carnes) Dunham, was born at Ottawa, Kansas on Sept 9, 1868. At his passing in Mary Davier hospital at 3:55 a. m. on Sunday, April 24, 1955 after an extended illness, he had attained the age of 86 years, seven months and 15 days. Mr. Dunham came with his parents to this community and was united in marriage here on November 26, 1889 with Miss Etta M. Monarch. They had made this their home for the greater share of their unusually long and happy married lives, with the exception of a quarter-century at Topeka, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Dunham returned to the home community in 1945, and enjoyed five years of quiet retirement before the good wife and mother answered her summons on December 15, 1950. Thus was terminated a marital relationship which had lasted for 61 years. Loneliness since his wife's passing has been in a large degree dispelled by a daughter, Mrs. Merle Helmers, with whom the deceased had resided the past few years. She had patiently cared for him until his declining condition forced his hospitalization several weeks ago. To the end he had received the most patient and loving care, with everything possible being done in an effort to ease his suffering and prolong his life. Mr. Dunham had been a painter and decorator during his productive years, practicing his trade both here and in Kansas while a resident of Topeka. He was fond of people, who readily responded to his kind and gentle attitudes, and especially adored the children, not only of his own family but those who happened by his door.
Also surviving are one brother, A. J. Dunham of LaHarpe, and four sisters, Mrs. Lena Thrush and Mrs. May Daugherty of LaHarpe, Mrs. Sadie Daugherty and Mrs. Myrtle Pence, both of Lomax. Last rites were held at the Banks funeral home. [In addition to this obituary, funeral home records indicate Logan died in 1955, not 1954 as inscribed on his tombstone.]
Nettie Monarch, daughter of Edward Monarch and Elizabeth Swisher, was born June 8, 1866, in McDonough County, Illinois, probably Hire Township. She died December 15, 1950, in Hancock County, burial at LaHarpe City Cemetery.
When Logan and Nettie married, he stated on the Board of Health document that he was born in White Water, Kansas. We have located a Whitewater, Kansas, in Butler County. There's a fair distance between Franklin and Butler Counties, designated by the F and the B on the map above.
Based on the obituary of Clarence Dunham, he was born in Blandinsville Township, McDonough County, and his sisters were both born in the town of LaHarpe, Hancock County.
