| CLARENCE L DUNHAM
ILLINOIS S1 USNRF WORLD WAR I JUNE 2 1891 JAN 4 1953 |
Funeral services are being held this (Wednesday) afternoon in the Banks funeral home for Clarence L. "Blondie" Dunham, long-time LaHarpe barber, who passed away on Sunday in Iowa City. Rev. C. E. Liston of the Methodist church is officiating, and burial will be made in LaHarpe cemetery. Clarence L. Dunham, retired barber and genial citizen throughout the major share of his life, passed away in University hospital at Iowa City, Iowa on Sunday evening, January 4, 1952 after a severe and confining illness of almost eight years. He was 61 years of age. The deceased, a son of Logan G. and Nettie (Monarch) Dunham, was born east of Blandinsville on June 20, 1891 but came with his parents to LaHarpe within the first year of his life. Clarence early was accorded the name "Blondie" by his friends. And from the time he toddled about the family home into the bleak days of declining health the nickname brought ___ ___tention and his smile____. He received his education __ the public schools of LaHarpe, discontinuing his education at a relatively early age to get into the business of adult living. He went to Terre Haute as a youth and there under Charlie Bryan learned carefully and well the barber trade. This proved to be Mr. Dunham's professional interest throughout his life. He worked at his trade at Dallas City, Carthage, Roseville and LaHarpe, where some of his first and last days of his service to his fellowmen with the comb and scissors were spent. A number of years ago after barbering in the aforementioned communities, he returned to LaHarpe, bought out the shop of Lester Mesick and continued there and at other locations in association with several other fellows of his trade. Mr. Dunham was united in married on April 12, 1920 with Lydia Helmers, whose death occurred on September 13, 1948. Both were great lovers of boys and girls, though it had not been their privilege to have children of their own. Perhaps for this reason, he took a special liking to the little fellows who came to his shop, among them many present-day adult citizens with fond memories of their first hair cut from Blondie, the barber. The Dunhams remained here until his health broke in 1944, when they moved to Macomb. Mr. Dunham has been hospitalized the past four years, much of that time in the veterans' hospital at Clinton, Iowa. He was a veteran of the first World War. His passing now is mourned by his aged father, L. G. Dunham, of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Merle Helmers, of LaHarpe and Mrs. Geraldine Hall, of Topeka, Kansas.
If the 1920 census listing for the Dunham family is accurate, Clarence was married and divorced prior to his marriage to Lydia. Clarence's sister, Merle, married Lydia's brother, Henry. |
