 JOHN CAMPBELL  1840-1911
AGNES ISABELL MORT  1848-1922

A portrait of John and Agnes in their later years. FOR DISPLAY ON THIS WEBSITE ONLY.
From the collection of Delbert Campbell

John Campbell was the son of John and Mary Campbell, both immigrants from Ireland.  They and another son, Patrick, lie buried at Lincoln Cemetery just east of Fountain Green, Hancock County, Illinois.

John, the son, was born about 1840 in Iowa and died June 29, 1911, in Tennessee, McDonough County, Illinois, burial at Majorville Cemetery, Hancock County.  Obituary  Tombstone

An outline map of Iowa counties, illustrating the location of Henry County. The 1850 census entry for John was an anomaly, showing that he was born in Kentucky, and the 1860 census presents a puzzle in and of itself, with the Campbell siblings being listed as born in Illinois and with the surname Graham (apparently their stepfather's surname).  The 1870 census indicated John was born in Illinois, as did his obituary.  In 1880, 1900 and 1910, his birth state was reported as Iowa. When John enlisted in the Union Army, he stated he was born in Trenton, Iowa, which is Henry County. Regarding the accuracy of both the birth date stated in his obituary, January 12, 1840, and Trenton as a specific location, our opinion is reserved.  In the 1840 Federal Census of Henry County, Iowa, there was no family headed by a John Campbell (or a variation of that surname) and comprised of family members in the appropriate age ranges.  However, the Campbells could have been living with another family, could have moved shortly after John was born, or might have been missed in the census.

During the Civil War John served first in Company D of the 71st Illinois Infantry from July 22, 1862 to October 29, 1862.  He was described as being 22 years of age, height 5' 4 1/2", brown hair, hazel eyes, light complexion.

He signed up a second time and served in Company F of the 50th Illinois Infantry from October 9, 1864, to July 13, 1865.  At recruitment he was described being 23 years old, height 5' 5", with auburn hair, blue eyes, fair complexion.  Click on the photo at left to view this photograph of brothers "Gim" and John Campbell, and John's pension application card.

On September 8, 1865, in Hancock County, Illinois, John married Agnes Isabell Mort.  They were married by the son of Joseph Smith, the famous Mormon leader who was assassinated in 1844. news clipping, circa 1911.

28, 1848 in Pennsylvania.  She and John became the parents of 16 children.

John and Agnes lived in more than one location during their married life. According to grandson Delbert Campbell, they lived for some period of time on the farm originally belonging to Major John Williams, adjacent to Majorville Church and Cemetery.  It was a small frame home with two bedrooms.

Agnes died in Hancock Township, Hancock County, on December 30, 1922.  Obituary  She was buried at Majorville Cemetery alongside her husband.  Resting nearby are several of her children, her parents, two brothers and a sister.  Tombstone

The children of John Campbell and Agnes Mort were:

i. Ella Catharine Campbell, "Kate", born September 8, 1866, in Hancock County, probably Hancock Township.  Her middle name is found as Catharine on her marriage license, Catherine on her tombstone.
