Irma and Frank Goff, from the collection of Delbert Campbell

Irma B. Campbell, daughter of John and Agnes Isabell Mort Campbell was born in Illinois, probably Hancock Township, Hancock County, on January 19, 1887.

Charles Harvey Zimmerman, born in 1886, was the son of Charles Edward Zimmerman and Iva Ella Parker.

Irma and Charles were married on May 5, 1905.  He died November 15, 1906.

They were the parents of two sons:

He married Bessie Gertrude Brown on December 18, 1923, at Plymouth, Hancock County, Illinois. They were the parents of four children.  Portrait of Gaylord and Bessie

Click for more information.Charles Harvey Zimmerman Jr., born January 28, 1907, in McDonough County, Illinois.  He married Cora Hill in 1925, but tragedy struck later the same year.  Harvey died in a hospital in Macomb, McDonough County, on November 23, 1925, as the result of a hunting accident. He was leaning on his shotgun which was propped butt down on a tree stump.  The shotgun slipped off the stump and fired, inflicting mortal wounds.  Harvey lingered for two or three days but then died.  He was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.  Photograph of Gaylord and Harvey

Public records provide a good example of the confusion we often encounter with people's names.  In the 1910 census he was named as Charles H.; in 1920, Harvey C.; State of Illinois death records show him as Charles Harvey Zimmerman; his tombstone reads
Harvey C.

A 1944 news item about Frank Goff.Between 1910 and 1917 Irma married Charles Frank Goff, son of Francis M. Goff and Elnora Gingles.  Frank was born in Rock Island County, Illinois.  The date of birth entered on his 1917 Selective Service registration was March 17, 1888.  The 1900 census reported March 1889 and the year on his tombstone is 1889.

Frank and Irma had no children together.

It appears that Frank and Irma first became the guardians and then the adoptive parents of Irma's niece, Wanda Neal, after the unfortunate early death of Irma's sister, Nina Esther, in 1918.

Delbert Campbell remembered his aunt Irma as a woman with a lively sense of humor who never met a stranger.  He and another young man once took their girlfriends to Irma's house for dinner. While cleaning up after the meal, Irma was washing the dishes and the girls were drying.  She was literally tossing the dishes to the girls.  At least one plate crashed to the floor, but that didn't stop Irma: she kept on washing and tossing.

Excerpted from a postcard sent to her sister-in-law:

Hallo Ollie,
Am about dead with a cold so will write a line or two before I croke.  We got our old cow home yesterday, the kids and I went after her.  Come over and I will give you some butter full of flies and hairs.       Irma

Frank died in 1963, Irma died in 1978; they were both buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County.  Tombstones
