![]() The date of birth on recorded on Alta's tombstone is September 23, 1884. The two entries for Alta in the 1900 census indicated she was born in September 1882. Both obituaries reported she was born September 22, 1882. The birth date inscribed on the tombstone for Grover, her brother, is December 8, 1884. Porter Earl Mourning was the son of William H. Mourning and Mary A. Porter. He was born August 9, 1885, in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois. In 1910 he was farming in Tennessee Township. He named his nearest relative (his wife) as Anna Thersa Syble Mourning; they were living at 517 9th St. So., Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was unemployed at that time. The registrar described him as being of medium height and build, with brown eyes and brown hair, and having no infirmaties that would prevent him from serving in the military. In 1920 Earl and Anna were living in St. Paul, Minnesota. She had come in the 1880s from Canada to the United States. They had no children. He was working as a plumber. In the summer of 1924 Earl attended a Mourning reunion held in Tennessee, Illinois; a news item about the reunion stated he was living in St. Paul. |
