DEATH WAS SUDDEN

Corner's Inquest Found Death of Mrs. Earl Mourning Caused by Heart Failure.

Mrs. Earl Mourning dropped dead about 9 o'clock Monday at her home in Tennessee having been in poor health for the past three months. County Coroner Peter Dougherty held an inquest this morning and the jury found that death was caused by heart failure from over exertion.  Those who acted as jurors were, Benton, Lawyer, Frank Coats, Frank Smith, Edward Callahan and Warren Terry.

Alta Campbell was born near Joetta Ill., Sept 22, 1882* and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Campbell.  She was married Sept. 23, 1906, to Earl Mourning of Tennessee.  No children were born to this union.  Besides her husband and mother, the following brothers and sisters survive her; William Campbell, of Oklahoma, Charles of Fountain Green, Thurman and Thomas of Tennessee, Mrs. Agnes White of California, Mrs. Ida Conn, Mrs. Earl Conn**, Mrs. Fannie Shifley, Mrs. Belle Gordon, and Miss Nina Campbell, all of near Tennessee.  Deceased was one of the most highly respected women of her community and counted her friends by her acquaintances.

Mourning.

Alta Campbelll was born in Hancock conty, Illinois, September, 22nd. 1882.  She was married to Earl P. Mourning on Sept. 23, 1906 at Carthage Ill.  She departed this life Feb. 12th., 1912 at her home in Tennessee, Ills., aged 29 years, 4 months an 21 days.

She was one of a family of 16 children, three sisers two brothers and an indulgent father preceeded her to the Spirit world.  Besides the grief stricken huusband four brothers, six sisters and a loving mother are left to mourn her loss.

Her death was sudden.  Although she had been in poor health for a number of weeks, she had been in better spirits during the day than for some time.

She was a sacrificing wife, a dutiful daughter, a loving sister and a good neighbor, never too busy to lend a helping hand.

To a friend a few days before her death, she said she had no fear of death   We feel her lost keenly but commend her spirit to Him who gave it.

A 1910 photograph of Alta.Alta J. Campbell was one of the younger of the 16 children born to John Campbell and Agnes Mort.

The date of birth on recorded on Alta's tombstone is September 23, 1884.  The two entries for Alta in the 1900 census indicated she was born in September 1882.  Both obituaries reported she was born September 22, 1882.  The birth date inscribed on the tombstone for Grover, her brother, is December 8, 1884.

Porter Earl Mourning was the son of William H. Mourning and Mary A. Porter.  He was born August 9, 1885, in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois.  In 1910 he was farming in Tennessee Township.

By September of 1918 when he signed up for the draft, Earl had remarried.  He named his nearest relative (his wife) as Anna Thersa Syble Mourning; they were living at 517 9th St. So., Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He was unemployed at that time.  The registrar described him as being of medium height and build, with brown eyes and brown hair, and having no infirmaties that would prevent him from serving in the military.

In 1920 Earl and Anna were living in St. Paul, Minnesota.  She had come in the 1880s from Canada to the United States.  They had no children.  He was working as a plumber.

In the summer of 1924 Earl attended a Mourning reunion held in Tennessee, Illinois; a news item about the reunion stated he was living in St. Paul.  Mourning Reunion

and in the household where she was working.
